I am educated and don't need to look it up to determine that a great deal of your posts fit the bill. Since you looked it up and chose what you consider a back up to being "drafted",look it up again and study the extensive definitions carefully. On the other hand ,I speculated that you WOULD  have to look it up but really not understand the meaning and how it applies to you with most of your blah blah blah.-SNORK!

let some bimbo denigrate my military history

If you are referring to me, you are obviously delusional. And misogynistic.  I never said one thing to denigrate your military history. It was you who denigrated those men who fled to Canada, rather than be drafted, as "cowards".

Correct: Some BIMBO...Have you seen what she has called me in some of her posts???

I guess we can add "bimbo" to the growing list of English words you don't know the meaning of.

I don't even know why I am responding to YOUR delusional post. here are your own words:

"Not agreeing with going off to kill people on the other side of the planet who pose no threat to you isn't something that makes one a coward. Not wanting to join the military doesn't make someone a coward."

"Just as strutting around with a gun doesn't make someone a hero."

I was DRAFTED and had no CHOICE!!! I did not agree with the war and volunteered with the Air Force, adding another 2 years to my service in the prime of my life just to avoid being sent to Vietnam. You have no idea what you are talking about..Goodbye, Adios and Hasta la Vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why on earth did you take what I said as a put down of your military service? I was talking about why young men fled to Canada, because you found it necessary to label them as cowards.

Get over yourself.

You are obviously determined to call them something deragatory, but in fact you conveniently forget that the US govt. gave them all amnesty- they were pardoned, so no, they are not criminals.

They WERE criminals...pardoned/amnesty happens AFTER the fact. It still does not change the FACT that they were DRAFT DODGERS!!!

As are a whole lot of Russians who have left or are trying to get out of Russia before they get conscripted to go kill Ukranians. And you think that's a bad thing? Being a draft dodger is a much worse thing than killing women and children?

How dare you pontificate from on high or from your nunnery or wherever you are, on something that you obviously have NO knowledge of!!! Your narrow brain has more sidetracks than a Chicago rail-yard. Now you are rolling over to a brand new war! Why not go back to WW2, a war that was WON primarily because of draftees…if not for them this thread would be written in either German or Japanese!!!

You seem to not have a clue as to the reality of the situation 55+ years ago at the height of the Viet Nam war, whereas I lived it! The draft dodgers were primarily rich white kids whose parents paid for their frolicking the war away in Canada or paying for the doctors and expensive universities in order to earn medical of educational exemptions. And who were the bulk of the draftees? They were mostly minorities from the ghettos and barrios, and from poor Middle American white families. So put that in your Socialist pipe and smoke it!!! I was stuck for most of my military time in a moldy, dingy WW2 barracks and the best thing to come out of that was my exposure to Jazz, R&B, Blues and Latin music as well as the various cultures that I would not have had the privilege of experiencing otherwise.

I am sure that this thread is down to about 2 readers so I think I will sign off and leave just one…You!!!

Maybe we should invite mudgirl to give a presentation of her views to the American Legion in Chapala but let her pay for her own security. (I know many US veterans and I think her views are despicable at best).

Oh, really? I don't have a clue? 55 years ago I was 17 years old, living in the US, just graduated from high school. I can assure you I had plenty of clue about the reality of the situation.

Then I moved to Canada. Where I can also assure you I met and knew many draft dodgers, none of whom were "rich white kids", nor were they "frolicking". They were finding ways to earn a living (because no, they weren't trust fund babies nor were their parents supporting them), working hard, adjusting to life in a new place and missing their families.

Your version of "reality" in that regard is a fantasy.

This train wreck began when the word Socialism came up and I put in my 2 pesos that ALL Socialism is evil…from Leninism/Marxism, to the Nazi Socialist Workers Party to the Castro and Hugo Chávez version of it right here in our hemisphere. This evolved into defenders of Socialism here arguing that some government programs in the US such as Medicare are Socialist. I pointed out that these were paid into programs and that in fact I do not use Medicare since I was eligible for VA Healthcare due to the GI Bill of Rights earned by my service (drafted) during the Vietnam war. Someone actually posted: “Sounds like a great socialist program, lifetime care for only 4 years service (which I do support by the way)......you are so happy to be "entitled to your entitlements" when they work in your favour.”…and it went on from there and into draft dodgers, mostly rich white kids enjoying the good life in Canada and now The Nun is disputing this FACT!!!

Her facts are spot on. If your Daddy was rich, there were many other ways to get out of the draft including bribes or any other country in the world. If your Daddy was poor and you opposed the war, you definitely headed to Canada. If the war is a just one most who serve are happy to participate.
