So sad and so very avoidable

I mentioned, last fall after Canadian Thanksgiving, that I would no longer be joining the same friends at Adelita's once a week because of the attitude of one person. I found out at that dinner that he was unvaccinated. It wasn't so much that statement but his attitude in general that helped to make the decision. He said he only took precautions when he had to do so. He also stated that he had a very strong immune system and had never been sick in his life. I stated that it wasn't about HIM. Haven't seen that couple since but recently started to get together with the others who are all double vaxxed... one of whom is a cancer patient.

Just got a very sobering e-mail. The "never been sick in my life" gentleman MAY be able to return home with oxygen in the next few days. His wife (whom he brought Covid home to) is being transferred to Hospital Civil in Guadalajara. She is not expected to make it. The friend who sent me the e-mail had to explain those facts to him. She said the devastation in his eyes was unfathomable. He will never get over this even if he recovers himself.

Please. It's not about you. Please take precautions. We are all in this together.

Please, for your sake and for the sake of others with whom you have contact, get your vaccine shots. If you have negative thoughts, check with your Doctor. Both mine in Seattle and lakeside urged me to get mine ASAP. And hoped that more people would become vaccinated,

AGAIN, please get your Civid19 vaccine shots for both yourself and for the sake of others.

My wife and myself in 2020 had 8 friends die in the San Luis Potosi INSABI hospital on ventilators from Covid-19. One of my sister in laws, also back in 2020, had Covid-19 and was at home on an oxygen concentrator for 2 months. She has no long term health problems from it. Since the first vaccines 2021, our friend's older sister died of Covid-19. She was around 75.

This is to close the loop on the original post. My friend passed away today from Covid. She was intubated 8 days ago and that is the last resort from which very few recover. Her husband has shed the virus and is testing negative but he still has shortness of breath and other symptoms that his Doctor is monitoring.

So sad, so avoidable. Vaccination could have prevented this dreadful outcome. Stay safe everyone.

I do not believe the virus will ever be "over", we will have it with us always. However, the pandemic is over, the virus will never be 100% gone. People will still get sick just as they do with the cold and flu. Probably will need to get a virus shot every year just as with the flu.

I sort of agree except that there is a new variant around. Yes, people who are VACCINATED, will get sick like they do with the cold and the flu. Those who are unvaccinated will be far sicker and will, unfortunately, die or develop long Covid which is kind of a living death. Still lots to learn. Stay safe.

I remember when Bill O'Reilly said that Covid will take the lives of 30,000 Americans no different than the common seasonal flu and it did not matter anyway because most of those deaths would be the elderly who were "on their last legs anyway."  Well he missed that death count by a few hundred thousand and now the new demographic of most  fatalities are in the unvaccinated 30 to 40 year olds.  Seems most of those "on their last legs"  are either vaccinated or dead now.

I believe that is not correct, though I truly wish it were the case.     Definitely a dip in cases in most places.   Now comes the relaxation of restrictions and opening up.....how many times has that happened now and then UP we go again, likely with a / the new variant as Ferret mentions.

Canada's chief public health doctor is already forecasting a significant fall increase that could see most or all mandates and restrictions needed again.

Watch and wait and stay safe......it isn't hard to continue to use care.

But isn't there always going to be a new variant?  Isn't that the same with the flu every year?  It mutates and changes constantly that is why the flu vaccine is only good 50% of the time on a good year.  We either learn to live with Covid or spend the rest of our lives living in fear.

I'm not living in fear. I just take precautions. Quite frankly I don't want the flu either. On the other hand, I am selective about where I eat as well because I want food that is prepared well and in a clean environment. That's not fear, that's smart and cautious. YMMV.

What is this constant repetition of "living your life in fear", by people who have been harping on "we need to get back to normal" from all the way back to when the pandemic first reared its ugly head and precautions were instituted.

As Ferret said, taking precautions has nothing to do with living in fear.

It doesn't bother me at all to put on a mask in public places. I'm not walking around doing my shopping "in fear" just because I choose to do what I can not to spread or contract a contagious disease.

Do you walk out into the middle of a busy street without paying any attention to traffic? Or do you look both ways to make sure you don't get run over? Does that mean you're living in fear?

Stop repeating all the buzz phrases you hear and get real.

Since I've had both my annual flu booster shot, and my likely-annual covid booster shot:

-- Commentary to readers in general, not directed at just you --

I believe "pandemic" has a very fuzzy worldwide transition to "endemic" that is going to last a while, to roughly approximately 2023 which was my prediction a couple years ago.

Also, almost a couple years ago, there was someone that asked one of the most powerful laboratory artificial-intelligence (OpenAI's GPT-3) about the pandemic -- and asked when the pandemic would end.  Its answer was "2023".  Funny that it matched my rough prediction of endemic status.

There are countries have already started transitioning to "endemic ops", and many are fiercely agreeing/disagreeing.  While others are not transitioning yet.  And of course, those fierce state-by-state politics.

The 1918 influenza pandemic took about roughly the same time period to fade into an endemic status as well -- but far less people are killed these days thanks to the combined impact of having vaccines and also pre-exposure, making more of the population more resistant to the virus.

The flu also keeps generating new variants, much like covid does.

I believe that by approximately 2023(ish), that the death rates of covid and flu will be agreed (by both sides of the polarized political spectrum) be within each other's ranges in the majority of countries worldwide.  It takes about 2-3 years after a pandemic before the polarized peoples starts agreeing of the end of a pandemic.  This projects to 2023.   That is when their electorates start voting the people who want to lift mandates, and most of the world's governments and medical advice will likely treat both covid and flu more identically.

Note -- Whether that's what you want or not, is not a debate I wish to dive into -- remember, lots of misinformation and maskers-vs-antimaskers existed in that era too 1918-1920 too if you actually pick up the library books at a big major-city library, it's sad and shocking the similarities to covid

Although medical knowledge was still limited at the time, and the flu shot didn't come out until 1945, the politicization were just as fierce -- and both sides of mask mandates were fiercely fought.  That was over 100 years when the Flu first became a pandemic!

It's just impressive the politics and science similarities when comparing covid and flu, as a student of history books.  I read as voraciously as my big posts.

So here's my speed-power-pointing from history books about mask mandates in year 1918:
