What was your primary motivation

Recommended Posts

In 1998,we had 1-2 feet of snow in the first week, in 2 days, of October, looked at each other and said we gotta get outta here by wife's early retirement in 2005 and start selling off my bus. and inventory by then. Did research and discovered many other benefits about Chapala where we have now resided in the same casa for 15+ years.

Since my wife and I came from San Diego the weather definitely wasn't a factor. Cost of living was for sure. I retired when I was 55. With the sale of our house and some investments we were able to move down here and live comfortably until SS kicked in. My wife being born in Mexico also played a part in the decision.

Weather and lifestyle.  We were living in Albuquerque which doesn't get even remotely as cold as Canada and it has a lot of sunshine.  Just really loved the walk everywhere lifestyle of the location we chose.

We are not leaving.  We'll deal with the health care issue here, frankly although we have supposedly medical coverage there, the hassle with getting it and dealing with all the related BS there, as opposed to the simplicity and quality here, is worth paying for.  We have made the decision that we are not going to go to extraordinary lengths to prolong life when our time comes, we've had too many experiences with friends and relatives suffering far too much from that and dying anyway.

Best decision we ever made coming here, just wish we'd done it 10 years sooner.

Certainly a factor. We had decided to retire to Mexico or Panama, and sold our house in the mountains. Husband moved to Mexico to scope out the areas and I moved into town to be closer to work. Neighbors didn't bother to shovel their sidewalk so it was lumpy ice. I took the dog for a walk and we walked carefully over the icey crud. When we got to the driveway, the snow and melted and refrozen so it was smooth glare ice. Dog said "good, nice smooth sidewalk" and took off at a brisk pace pulling me down on the ice. I had a cracked rib on one side, a bruised rib on the other, and a twisted knee. I have shoveled my last snowflake!

I hear you loud and clear about end of life decisions. I have also heard that from many other people. Observation tells me the actual decision is frequently not what was said while still in good health. Nothing scientific, just my observations.

About thirteen years ago, somebody told me of a writer's conference in San Miguel de Allende. I went because it was in Mexico and I didn't know anything much about Mexico.

At the end of the conference week, I went home and started getting ready to move. Lived in San Miguel for a while, Mexico City for a while, San Cristobal de las Casas, and later wound up in Guanajuato where I've been for about 10 years. Haven't been in the states now for about 5 years.

Since we're on the topic of death (sort of) , allow me to mention:

https://lastlanding.com/

a digital deadman switch service for people who want to make sure that selected info gets into the right hands in the event of their disappearance or death. It's a good way to make sure things that need to be disclosed do indeed get disclosed.

And speaking of disclosure: I am the creator / owner.

Weather (vs. Eastern WA state), and sense of adventure. After 12 years of part time then full time, and turning Medicare age, we decided to move back to the US and a new adventure here in Greenville SC.

I retired from international teaching at 60. Japan doesn't care where you go when you retire, as long as you LEAVE the COUNTRY when your work visa expires. We had planned to retire at 65, but an excellent opportunity to leave earlier presented itself and we took it. We had been planning for years and had a list. Whatever country ticked off the most boxes would win:

NO MORE EARTHQUAKES - After 15 years in Los Angeles and 11 in Tokyo-no more!

NO MORE HURRICANES -     I grew up in South Louisiana & Japan has monsoons !

NO MORE HUMIDITY and PINE TREES - VA has too much of both, as did Louisiana.

NO HIGH DESERT, NO MORE SNOW/ICE - VA and Tokyo had plenty of that.

Low Cost of Living with Affordable Homes to Purchase - I'm a retired teacher. We won't go hungry, but we are not rich.

Near to an International Airport, preferably in Western Hemisphere- At the time, we had family still living in the USA, but now we just want it for travel. Please, please let this Covid be over so I can travel while I can still walk!

Excellent and Affordable Health Care

Decent Infrastructure

Near to a Large City with all the amenities that comes with that.

Great Weather. We lived in SoCal South Bay not far from the beach and were wanting that kind of weather.

Walkable Living Without a Car

A Language I Can Speak

We now live in San Antonio, in Mirasol, and it ticks ALL the boxes. Happy with the move and plan to die here.

Weather and needing to do something different. Even though I'm from the west coast of Canada, so not that cold compared to other parts of the country, it's still too cold for me most of the year.

Unlike others here, I love heat and humidity, which is why I chose to live in coastal Mexico. Places like Lakeside and San Miguel are far too cold for me in the winter.

But having lived in Mexico for about 20 years now, I'm leaning towards moving back to Canada in a few years. Too far from daughters and grandkids, and while I have no heath issues now, am concerned about good health care as I age. I can't afford the high cost of private policies here.

Ever since they allege that my team hit three casinos in Europe and one in Macau, now I am Interpol top ten.  They made documentary about my so called exploits. It is called "Oceans 11" . I thought George Clooney played an accurate role as their fearless and brilliant leader.

I moved here to get my husband away from sports on TV, the grandkids and Church twice on Sunday. He eventually went back to Texas so I guess I got rid of him too. 🤣

I bet you're both happy.

You need to be smoking some better stuff. Open that pocketbook a little wider.

For us it was the 3 "C"'s. Climate, .Cost of Living and Culture.

However as I have aged living at 5,000ft has become a issue and future medical support appears much better for me to return  NOB

I check my blood oxygen saturation often. There my first check use to read 94 or 95 deep breathing I could read about 97 or 98. Here in San Carlos my first check 98 and with deep breathing 99. Sea level makes a difference.

Good to hear. This plant is called "Milk of Mazar" or "the Golden One", it is used to produce Mazar strain of handpressed Afghan Bahlki Hashish. I am more of a collector than grower or consumer. I seem to pick dangerous places and war zones. I plan to order some seeds trom Kandahar, Afghanistan and am growing out some Kibustan Sativa from the Phillipines mountains, where if you get caught growing, you get a life sentence in a cruddy prison.

That is a good reason to move here. You can grow things year round, once you understand the minor flucuations. There has never been a frost here, ever. Cannabis is perfect plant for this climate, it is a penstroke away from being legal. But selling anything off the books will get you in deep s##t really quickly!
