Advance Care Planning Workshop on Living Well and Dying Well in Lakeside

Description:

Why bother to plan ahead of an emergency?

Because most health care emergencies involve many people.  Some are known to you, some are not. The more information they have, the better your outcome.

Planning ahead puts you in control.

Whether you’re here full time, part time, or just visiting, registering your 2-page LCS Post Life and Emergency document will make a difference in your quality of life and your peace of mind.

This 2-part workshop gives you information on Mexican healthcare directives, wills, and the LCS document along with guidance and motivation to complete and register your document as part of your total advance care planning process.

Course Fee: $300 MXN

Date and time: Wednesday,  Feb 09 & 16 from 10:00 to 12:00 pm.

This is a 2-session class

About the instructor:

Loretta S. Downs

Contact: loretta.downs@gmail.com

Loretta Downs, MA is an internationally recognized inspirational speaker, writer and consultant on the subject of preparing for and supporting the end-of-life experience with comfort and dignity.  Ms. Downs is a storyteller with extraordinary experiences that suffuse her lively presentations with love, compassion, hope and wisdom.

Her perspective on the end of life is informed by more than 35 years of being a companion to AIDS patients, friends, family, hospice patients and nursing home residents through the end of life.

Ms. Downs retired from a successful business career at 50 and was drawn by her experiences to study dying and death. She earned a Masters Degree in Gerontology in 2009. She is Past-President of the Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition, a Metta Institute Certified End-of-Life Care Practitioner, a graduate of Roshi Joan Halifax’s “Being With Dying” training, a Certified Respecting ChoicesÔ Advance Care Planning Facilitator, a Certified Senior Advisor, and a death doula.  She is a member of a hospital Ethics Committee, the Association for Death Education and Counseling, the American Society on Aging, and the International End-of-Life Doula Association. Shed has published numerous articles and been quoted by others in  both print and on social media.

She founded ChrysalisÔ End-of-Life Inspirations to fulfill her mission “to create opportunities to talk about dying and death in positive terms.” She advocates for private ChrysalisÔ Rooms in nursing homes and hospitals so families can keep vigil with a loved one who is dying. Her reflections on the history of keeping vigil are included in an interview in a ChrysalisÔ Room for the film, “Consider the Conversation, A Documentary on a Taboo Subject.” Author Katy Butler cites the Chrysalis Room in her book, "The Art of Dying Well: A Practical Guide to a Good End of Life," as does Joyce Simard in her book, “Namaste End of Life Care for People With Dementia.”

She is quoted in Louis Silverstein’s book, “Encountering Life’s Endings.”

In summer, Ms. Downs raises Monarch butterflies from eggs found in her garden.  She uses their mysterious stages of metamorphosis as a metaphor for the miraculous cycle of life.  The story of her spiritual connection to Monarchs was featured in a Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine cover story, and her TEDx talk, The Mysterious Metamorphosis at the End of Life.
