CHILLIN
I have this idea to make pickled onions from the recipe below. Instead of pearl onions, I am thinking of using the bulbs of Cebollas de Cambray. These are the onions with green onion on the top, and then a fairly large bulb. They are often used with grilled meats. Should work. Good time of year to plant. Have 700 seeds. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/103178/traditional-english-pickled-onions/
Ferret
That's a blast from the past! I have eaten many jars of Laings Pickled Onions in my lifetime. Can't find Laings anymore but Amazon has Haywards and Marks and Spencers brands for those who don't want to make their own.
Ian Greenwood
During my apprenticeship I worked in a famous north of England restaurant/ pub ,where we made pickled onions regularly to go with the cold luncheon buffet ..your recipe looks kinda boring ….try what I believe is a Canadian website called..Spruce eats and sorta combine with your own recipe ..Ian r
SunFan
Brings back memories. My family used to put up preserves every fall. The least favorite job I was assigned as the youngest was peeling the Pearl Onions. What a chore for a few small jars! SunFan
Ferret
Here is another recipe for pickled onions. It is almost exactly the same as Chillin's but there are reasons included for some of the things mentioned... and comments. Do not can using a water bath and why... the importance of the salt bath... and the importance of using malt vinegar and where to find it in large quantities. CHILLIN
This is a good website for British foods. This recipe for Branston pickle, but I think it needs Tamarind. https://culinaryginger.com/english-pickle-relish/
