jrod
It was announced by the feds before noon today that Jalisco has returned to Maximum Level RED starting Monday, August 9 through August 22. We are one of six states with maximum levels of risk. I’ve not seen yesterday’s updated hospitalization stats for just Guadalajara, but they’ve reconverted another 30+ beds to increase capacity. For those interested, here’s the link to the national stats as of yesterday. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Xitkxgv2WhVX1RilsBeuqJ7PDcwjLCmz/view. You can find the slide for Jalisco, as of Aug 5, in alpha order in the files. While Governor Alfaro has not yet commented publicly (as far as I’m following) on tonight’s upcoming announcement, the Mesa de Salud has gathered for an emergency session. As a point of comparison, when we went Level RED on January 15 ,2021, the following restrictions were put in place. It will be interesting to see what the governor does now. JANUARY 15, 2021's LEVEL RED RESTRICTIONS • No return to in-person classes until further notice. • No face-to-face work for any job that can be done remotely; this includes government work, businesses, etc. • No recreational, diversional, group activities of any kind that require personal attendance in any number • All public spaces (exterior or interior) are closed. No plazas, no parks, STAY HOME. • Social and familiar activities and gatherings of any kind are restricted—the “family” is still the main source of the problem. All events, celebrations, weddings, evento centers, etc are cancelled as of tomorrow. • PEOPLE OVER AGE 60 ARE TO REMAIN HOME. • Businesses/work will not stop, and will remain open so as to not impact the right to work and feed one’s family. (Alfie reiterates that the greatest risk is at home, not at work.) • What will stay open: health, public works and services, security, banks and notarios, transportation, public markets, hotels but without access to public areas, industry, construction • What is closed for the next two weeks: all corporate and professional offices, govt offices (except for windows that provide service to the public); bars, clubs, event centers, parks, zoos, gyms, cultural, entertainment and recreational areas both in- and outdoor; theaters, museums, casinos, any recreative/fun/entertainment activities or venues, in- or outdoor • What’s partially closed/restricted: self-service areas of department and commercial stores; shopping centers (common areas and parking restricted to 25%), Restaurants only till 10 pm and max 50% capacity; tianguis and commercial centers cannot have kids, people over age 60; and no minors under age 18. lcscats
I doubt if he has the political energy to do this now. He has announced before that he won't do this again. Time will tell.

Mostlylost
The Government of Guadalajara installed 16 sanitary filters in the Historic Center in order to reduce COVID-19 infections, which in recent weeks have increased in Jalisco. In different areas there are already fences and perimeter divisions so that visitors pass exclusively through the filters. These points will be placed only from Friday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

If I didnt, I would move to my nephews in Haida Gwai. Live on pristine fisheries and shellfish. Show the boys how to make bread, biscuits and grow veggies. According to Bill Bryson books, there is a lot of mystery surrounding the 1918 pandemic. To start with, it didn' t have flu like symptoms, just incredible sleepiness to the point of death. Then this form suddenly disappeared. Then it came back as flu like, very virulent, but again new cases might be found in Europe, and then lets say Egypt, on the same day, but there had been no airtravel. The third phase was the most tragic, with so many deaths, no idea about infection control. To this day, I believe they have never been able recover a DNA of the actual virus.

Pale Rider is another good book on the Spanish flu. It was written in 2017, and discusses how different countries tried to deal with it. https://www.amazon.com/Pale-Rider-Spanish-Changed-World/dp/1610397673

Here is an interesting article from the CDC on how the virus was recreated in the lab. The article is fairly short and only gets bogged down in jargon in a few places. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/reconstruction-1918-virus.html#discovering
CHILLIN
What a fantastic article, I love science and law. When I was nine years old I built a working model of the human diaphram breathing system as well as a smoke ring cannon, that used hippie incense. My elementary school science teacher loved me. When I graduated, she gave me a magnetic compass, and short book on orienteering. Which I learned and practised as (one of the) patrol leaders of my boy scout troop. Now, true North has shifted, and is shifting again. End of times.
Ian Greenwood
Is Mexico the only “ somewhat civilized “ country that does not require a vaccine , quarantine or a negative test to enter….I can’t decide who’s the dumbest Amlo or Mainecoones…… 3
bmh
As a high up functionary told me in Chiapas You cannot be that dumb and become president.. Sure has me fooled but who knows.. Here in Chiapas we are green.,who knows how or why..I have never heard of so many suck people. I rrceived a message from the barrio addociation saying that the farmacies doing the test are testing every 15 minutes, all day and that 30 % of the tests are positive.. They ended their report saying we are green like the watermelons are green..

mudgirl
Here's an interesting tidbit- while I was just in Canada, a friend of mine, who also happens to be a nurse, gave me her second to last bottle of "Thieves Oil" (it's apparently now impossible to find- she had ordered many bottles and passed them out to friends and family). The story is that during the bubonic plague, thievery was rampant- the theives would enter quarantined houses where people had died or were sick in bed with the plague, steal stuff, yet never got sick themselves. Turned out they were smearing their faces and hands with this oil- mostly cinnamon bark oil, which is supposedly the strongest anti-viral in the natural world. This bottle I have lists cinnamon, eucalyptus, and a few other anti-viral oils. So I'm going to be dotting a couple drops under my nose and on my mask when I go out in public. Anything that might help avoid this virus sounds good to me.
bmh
Nice story but as far as I know the bubonic plague is bacterial and not viral so it was just another snake oil.... A friend of mine got the bubonic plague from her cat who had gotten it from a squirel via the flees. They would have been better off wearing OFF if that is effective against flees...
mudgirl
Yes, you're right, bubonic plague is bacterial. But a lot of stuff that kills bacteria is also effective against viruses, like soap, alcohol and bleach. So not necessarily snake oil- there are plenty of natural substances that have strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Doesn't take the place of vaccines and masking, though.
