So far In 2021, United States border agents have detained 147,000 Mexican migrants, two-thirds of all such arrests made.

 

If trend continues, US authorities could see highest number since 2008

That's misleading. No one is suggesting that the majority of the 11.1 undocumented in the States are working in in fields. But the story does say the number runs around 50% of undocumented making up that work force. So while mudgirl was simply being sarcastic, her point hits home.

Without getting  into the nitty gritty of the political situation,  "something" needs to change in order to get the .professional unemployed  back  to work. I was in the US recently and the price of 1 advacardo  was 96cents, these came from MX

That is one half of the agricultural work force, not one half of the illegal immigrant population.  Very big difference and the reference does make it clear.  Bottom line, most illegals don't work in agriculture.  If one uses the more general figure of 20 million "undocumented" the agricultural workers are less than 3 percent of the total.  Hence characterizing this group as heavily employed in agriculture is misleading, to put it mildly.

I don't blame the folks for taking advantage of this situation at all.  Given their continued poor prospects in Mexico they are behaving in an economically rational manner.  A question for another day is how a country, Mexico, with so much potential delivers so little in actual results for their people.  Sad.

Add to that how many past administrations in Mexico encouraged our citizens to head north because of the huge boost to the Mexican economy with money sent home. Previous presidents even making negative public statements regarding the USA trying to halt illegal immigration.

Same is true to this day with the governments of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador because of the benefit to their economies with money sent from USA.

If you read my note correctly, you'll see I said up front: "No one is suggesting that the majority of the 11.1 undocumented in the States are working in in fields". The rest is very clear: "The portion of hired farm workers who are not legally authorized to work in the U.S. fluctuates around 50%, according to the USDA Economic Research Service."

By using farm workers as a primary example of what undocumented people do Mudgirl, not you, was suggesting just that.  I was simply clarifying your comment not arguing with it.  If only about 3 percent of the group is engaged in agricultural field work that is not a representative example of what the group does.  Using that as an example is an example of the logical fallacy, "Appeal to emotion."

Pew has published a detailed report on this topic.  It is a little dated but should not have changed much as over the last four years, until now, illegal immigration into the U.S. was declining.
