Plant-based Burgers

One other thing to consider:  how often do you take pure ground burger, cook it, and then add absolutely nothing else other than a bun? No, most folks salt & pepper their meat or use a spice combo. So, the plant-based burger may start out heavier in salt, but it doesn't need much, if any, after that. The burger, on the hand, is going to be bland without something. Of course, there are some fantastic sodium-free spices out there, but those take practice to find what works.

FWIW, while I gave up on beef burgers in MX since I got really sick in 2008, I still get them rare in US when visiting; never a problem there.

You are taking a risk anytime you eat a raw hamburger.  In Oklahoma, health department rules preclude a restaurant from serving a raw hamburger.  I never did but many restaurants still do.  Every year in the states there are massive recalls of hamburger meat because a company's mincer/grinder got infected with e-coli.  The meat from a company is usually shipped over a several state area so you are in danger no matter where you are.  A lot of the grocery stores grind their own beef but they buy the meat by the box  and the meat in the box could have been contaminated at the packer.  With a steak the e-coli is on the outside of the meat and will be cooked even if a raw steak is ordered.  With hamburger the meat is ground and now the e-coli is inside the meat and if  the meat inside is raw you can get  e-coli.

Here's the lowdown from our friend, Google:

As I see it, the biggest issue is with the sodium content, especially for those with conditions that require keeping sodium content low.  Other than that, it's probably a desirable option for those whose ethics require vegetarianism, but enjoy the taste of a hamburger.

From the article you quoted, one Beyond Burger simply isn't high in sodium.  Even if your doctor wants you to follow a low-sodium diet, the recommended daily amount for people with high BP or other ailments, is 1,500 mg per day.  For people with NO medical need for lower sodium the recommended daily amount is 2,300 mg.

The Beyond Burger has only 380 mg.

Unfortunately, many people see the word sodium on something and overreact.

That's your take on it? "overreact"?

Some of us on low salt regimes...and in general, too...like to add the salt to our taste rather than have it already added to the product.  Simple.

"Jump on you"??  Please. Can't you understand that a difference of opinion and an attack are very different?  I have absolutely no reason to attack any of the posters on here, although I strongly disagree with some of the opinions expressed.  Ideally, this forum would be a benign atmosphere where diffferences can be aired without hostility.

...and I would still prefer to do my own "salting" of real or plant based burgers.🙃

I certainly do understand the difference, and I wouldn't have made the point if I thought you did. Your attitude is far too confrontational. Just like in your most recent response: "Can't you understand... "

From what I've read, salting a Beyond Beef burger is basically unnecessary because they have added spices themselves, which they feel is necessary to give an acceptable overall taste to the product which is, after all, fake meat. Marketing a vegetable clone of a any product, especially on that costs two to  four times as much as the real thing, has to be a real challenge. As pointed out in another post, in this case the sodium isn't a large amount. But I never disagreed with your salting preference.
