The world has somehow survived at least three outbreaks of the bubonic plague, the Spanish flu and numerous other deadly diseases without the drastic measures governments around the world are now imposing to little or no effect on the spread of COVID.

It seems to me that this is a more a political problem than a medical one.

For those interested there is an old documentary on YouTube that explores the reason the bubonic plague did not totally wipe out European civilization when it first appeared, well before science and doctors had the least idea of what they were dealing with.

backwards logic. but it is okay to call the government stupid in its policies while not offering any suggestions of your own. so be it.

Upfront, you must be living in that bubble you recently referred to, how did you call it?  A bubble of farts if my memory isn't failing me.  The policy of not admitting seniors into stores is plain stupid as Maincoones points out, but specifically for Mexico.  Most seniors in Mexico live in extended families shared with their children that must work and their grandkids that must play.  Maybe this crazy plan of age discrimination might serve well the expat community here because they mainly live alone but it does nothing for the Mexican community in which this ludicrous plan was drafted up to protect.  Maybe, it would work in the States or in Canada because there sadly most seniors live alone.  But it will not save Mexicans, it only makes their lives harder.  Step out of that smelly bubble güey and come out and smell the jazmín that will be blooming tonight.

Not more contagious at home if people stay in a bubble, why are you comparing at home bubbles with being out in public crowded shops and seriously saying it is worse at home than out in public?

The thing is that in general, senior Mexicans aren't living in a bubble. They are normally living with younger relatives who may be coming and going from the home without taking any precautions. In those cases, the seniors are probably more likely to get infected at home than going shopping where they have to wear masks.

It isn't like the retired gringoes who are for the most part just living with their spouse or alone and may have a bubble with a few close friends who all understand and practice all the precautions.

But if Mexico wants to protect its seniors from contracting the virus while out shopping, they should do what has been done in Canada and other places- there are store hours that are designated solely for seniors to shop.

Of course in Canada, that makes more sense, as seniors there are much more likely to be doing everything possible to protect themselves, whereas Mexican seniors seem to be less vigilant, simply because of ignorance, mistrust of govt., or the fatalistic attitude that "It was God's will".

it does not matter how big or small or isolated new zealand is. they shut it down and it worked period.

Hey it is way easier to shut down a small isolated island country where most of the population is middle class or higher and a very small population to top it off.  All they had to do was close the airports and quarantine the small number of infected and bang their you have it.  But it won't ever work in Mexico.  Wake up dude.

New Zealand is often cited as "lockdowns work"

When the studies come out there will be many factors ,including the fact they are an island nation that closed their borders,  that enabled New Zealand to control covid.  However it still is there and there are outbreaks.

People are far from living normally

As of today.....

If you're from another country you can't enter New Zealand. In some cases you can apply for an exemption, eg. as an essential worker or for medical reasons.

As people arrive into New Zealand, they'll go to either a:

  • managed isolation facility (if they have no symptoms)
  • quarantine facility (if they have symptoms).

All of New Zealand is at Alert Level 1
The use of masks or face coverings is mandatory for:

  • people travelling on public transport services in, into and out of the Auckland region
  • the drivers of small passenger service vehicles in Auckland, such as taxis and app-based ride services
  • people travelling on passenger flights throughout New Zealand.

when there was bubonic plague and spanish flu there wasnt instant world travel like there is now.

A fact the deniers and those who like to make these sorts of comparisons conveniently ignore. Or maybe they just can't think past their one faulty thought at a time.

Just like those who point out how many people die from heart attacks or car accidents, as if that has any relevance to a highly contagious and possibly deadly virus.

At least some people are lucky enough to die almost instantly from a heart attack or accident, while dying from COVID is an extremely painful and panicky I Can't Breath experience.

Just would like to know ....Name 5 societies that flattened or crushed the curve and  are now living normally because of lockdowns.

For this question and the same one from all the apparently ignorant people:

1 - New Zealand  (totally valid example, doesn't matter they are an island, what matters is they locked down and stopped immigration and had 14 day mandatory quarantines for ALL arrivals)

2 - Australia  (which has 900  deaths vs 20,000 in Canada for a population about 2/3 the size, so about 93% better.......).....and as we all know, Canada is way better per capita than the USA....so YES, it works folks).       They just locked down 2 million people last week when they detected ONE new case of a variant.     Because that IS the time to do it - when you have a chance to stop it.

3 - Nova Scotia (

4 - Newfoundland

5 - PEI

6 - New Brunswick

7 - 3 to 6 above formed "The Atlantic Bubble" of 4 provinces (that's like states for the un-initiated) covering a huge land area and they flat out stopped all traffic coming in along with quarantining their "own" arrivals back into the area.

There are many others.   It works.    Stopping the spread, stops the virus, and also stops the mutations / variants.

Quite a few have flattened or crushed the curve, as virgogirl pointed out. As for living normally, of course not- that can't happen anywhere as long as the virus is rampant in the world.

It isn't a matter of Do This And the Virus Will No Longer Be a Concern. It's a matter of doing as much as possible to mitigate and contain the spread.

But if you still don't understand that a year into this pandemic, it's fairly pointless to try to explain that to you.

Ummmm....sorry, I know the rest of your post says what NZ has done has not worked.......but your own graph proves the point that the NZ lockdowns HAVE worked.

5 to 10 daily CASES (not deaths, cases) now in a population of 5mm would be the same as if the USA had 350 to 700 CASES a day.     Instead of 100,000 + and a DEATH count of 2500 to 3500.         At 350 to 700 CASES per day, the USA daily death count would be more like 20 to 30.....that's a saving of several.....thousand...lives...per .....day.

you have not a clue. apparently.  you just supported my comments. now lets see if the mods take offense to your use fo teh word güey. talk about offensive and insulting

Talking about being in a bubble, how is the word güey even remotely insulting, sure it means castrated bull, but nobody here uses it like that, in Mexico it is used on a daily basis to just and only mean dude, pronounced "way" as in no mames güey.  Seriously, what did you think I called you?

Yes, but it is used that way among friends and family, it's not something you use with someone you don't personally know.

It is mostly used as dude, they have better words for dumbass.  The term is so commonly heard and used, just walking down Madero from Coppell to the plaza you may easily hear it said 10 or 15 times by people walking past.  There was no malintent.  It is just an extremely common expression used by the younger guys of Mexico to mean dude.  Since you live in Chapala, try listening to the guys on the street speaking Spanish, you will hear it said all the time with zero malintent.

Mexican guys on the street using the term between themselves isn't at all the same as you using it to address another poster who you don't know personally. It doesn't make you hip, it makes you rude.

Just because you might call your buddy an a-hole in the course of conversation while having a couple of beers with no malintent, doesn't mean it would be cool to address your neighbor like that.
