El Informador today

The Secretary of Foreign Relations,Marcelo Ebrard, announced that the pharmaceutical company Pfizer assured the Mexican government that as of February 15, it will resume sending doses of vaccine for COVID-19, which has been agreed.

He explained that with Pfizer there is a pre-purchase contract for 32.4 million doses of the vaccine, and it comes directly from the plant in Belgium.

According to the commitment, the delivery began on December 23, but there is a delay of about three weeks , which has stopped the progress of the Mexican government's vaccination program.

"They have told us that as of February 15 they will resume shipping," said Ebrard.

Marcelo Ebrard also informed the legislators that tomorrow, Friday, the Covax mechanism (coordinated by the WHO) will formalize to the Mexican Government the amount of vaccines that will be provided to the country, as well as the date.

With this mechanism, Mexico has contracted for the acquisition of 51 million vaccines.

"Tomorrow (Friday) Covax will formalize what is going to supply us between February and March," said Ebrard.

Good news. So Mexico did actually sign a pre-purchase agreement for 32.4 million Pfizer vaccines. Great to hear this is confirmed. I heard wrong, obviously.

I am trying to remain positive that something good will come out of Mexico's efforts.

However, for months now, even Pfizer employees have discussed the optimal setting for their virus is a high density population area.

34 million doses requiring 2 doses won't even cover Mexico City.

Moving right along, I am hoping somehow Moderna enters the picture because of its less stringent, and longer shelf life than Pfizer.

I also hope Astro Zeneca improves its footprint in all considerations and gives Mexico a chance.

"Despite a somewhat later arrival, with less than the effectiveness claimed by its competitors, AstraZeneca’s vaccine might be favored because it can be stored, transported and handled at standard refrigerated conditions of between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit for at least six months.

The competing mRNA vaccines by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech require ultracold temperatures for stability. So the AstraZeneca vaccine will be easier to use in normal clinics, especially in rural America and the developing world."

I read this morning that JNJ is proving out at 56% efficacy in Latin American country trials, although JNJ claims ~ 60% in its U.S. trial.

Moral of the story: As anxious as people are, the vaccine story has many months if not years to get to where it needs to be; but, incremental improvements will help, because boosters will be needed, and those boosters should be better. Fingers crossed.

There’s good news and bad news on the vaccine front. The good news: Test results for Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) COVID-19 vaccine showed 72% effectiveness in the U.S., and Novavax (NVAX) said its vaccine was 90% effective in the U.K. While these are not up to the 95% standard of Pfizer’s (PFE) and Moderna’s (MRNA), they are still considered pretty good. Johnson & Johnson’s and Novavax’s vaccines won’t be available for distribution in the U.S. until April or later.

The bad news: Scientists had suspected that the current vaccines are less effective against the South African virus variant, and now test results are showing how much less. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine was only 57% effective against it, and Novavax’s was only 49% effective. The World Health Organization has suggested that 50% is the minimum level needed to combat the pandemic. The South African variant has been found in two cases in South Carolina recently.

Mutations like the South African variant are not unexpected, but it is likely that booster shots or new vaccine designs will be needed to combat them. This means continued monitoring of the virus for future mutations, and possible continued vaccination campaigns. Moderna has already announced that it is designing a booster shot to its vaccine.

Yet another variant, this one originating in Brazil, dubbed P.1, has shown up in the U.S., specifically in Minnesota. The individual had recently traveled to Brazil. Scientists seem even more concerned about this variant than they were about the South African variant. A study in the journal Science estimated that 76% of the population of Manaus, Brazil had already been infected, which should bring it close to herd immunity. But there are concerns that the P.1 variant is able to dodge the human immune system, although there isn’t much evidence to support that yet.

The Brazil variant “is probably the one causing the most concern among people watching this,” said William Hanage, an epidemiologist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. “It is fair to say that P.1 is the object of very, very serious attention and concern among epidemiologists. We don’t know why it has been so successful in Manaus.”

Scientists gave Russia's Sputnik V vaccine the green light on Tuesday February 2 saying it was almost 92% effective in fighting COVID-19 based on peer-reviewed late-stage trial results published in The Lancet international medical journal.

The results, collated by the Gamaleya Institute in Moscow that developed and tested the vaccine, were in line with efficacy data reported at earlier stages of the trial, which has been running in Moscow since September.

"The development of the Sputnik V vaccine has been criticised for unseemly haste, corner cutting, and an absence of transparency," said Ian Jones, professor at the University of Reading, and Polly Roy, professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

"But the outcome reported here is clear and the scientific principle of vaccination is demonstrated," the scientists, who were not involved in the study, said in a comment shared by The Lancet. "Another vaccine can now join the fight to reduce the incidence of COVID-19."

The results were based on data from 19,866 volunteers, of whom a quarter received a placebo, the researchers, led by the Gamaleya Institute's Denis Logunov, said in The Lancet.

The Sputnik V vaccine is the fourth worldwide to have Phase III results published in leading peer-reviewed medical journals following the shots developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca.

The site mivacuna.salud.gob.mx, enabled this Tuesday to register people over 60 years of age to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, has been inactive for more than 3 hours after its presentation at the conference "morning ”.

Read: On this page you can register to receive the Covid-19 vaccine

Users of social networks have reported that the page is down, so they have not been able to register or register a family member in that age range.

When presented at the conference, the site was active after 8 in the morning and showed a page where it was requested to enter a CURP to start the process.

However, by 8:30 in the morning, the site was displaying a white screen with the caption "This site cannot be accessed."

During the conference, a reporter questioned the authorities about this failure, as she agreed in the first attempt but then repeated the operation and was unsuccessful.

“The platform will be doing technical tests all the time and the experts will be monitoring that it works at all times, if right now it is circumstantially saturated, they will surely be watching that this does not happen, if it happens, do not worry, try again and register as soon as possible, ”said Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Health.

In addition, he emphasized that the only platform to register for this process is that of the federal government, since currently no federal entity or local government currently has orders for vaccines.

On Friday, the general director of Health Promotion, Ricardo Cortés, explained that the vaccination for older adults will be scheduled once the arrival of the vaccines is certain, so for now it can be contemplated that it will start towards the end of month.

In the National Vaccination Policy, it was originally contemplated to start it from the beginning of February, but the delay in the arrival of vaccines postponed all planning.

For February, federal authorities await the arrival of AstraZeneca vaccines from India and South Korea, already approved in the country, as well as the approval of the emergency use of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, while Pfizer promised to continue with the supply from the second fortnight of the month.

Don't miss: Salud has already signed an agreement for the Russian vaccine Sputnik V; 7.4 million will be received."

I just saw this on the national TV news.

Word of caution.  Lancet does NOT require the raw data to be shown to them in their peer review process.  They rely on the integrity of the submission and the data therein.  They do no testing of their own.  They simply review the data as submitted.

If the company (and/or Russian government in the case of Sputnik) fabricate or misrepresent data, the peer review will rarely discover that.

Both Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine got burned before.  Lancet now requires all the scientists on the project to sign a statement assuring Lancet assuring the data is accurate.

However, as stated in this article, peer reviews continue to be based on trust.

Trust Putin???

https://www.politico.eu/article/lancet-review-process-following-covid-19-saga-coronavirus/#:~:text=Under current practice at the,are issues of research integrity.

Peer review is only effective up to a point he said, "because the system of publication depends on trust."

"A paper gets submitted by a team of authors, and editors and peer reviewers take it on trust, that the report that they are reading is an accurate and reliable description of the work that has been done,” he said. “We start off with the proposition that we believe what scientists are telling us, and then we try and improve the paper based on what they're telling us."

the system does not accept my curp or the one fom my husband.. The curp number comes from my original card and was accepted by SRE when we got naturalized and the same number was used for our RFC so does that mean the system is not working  or that there are totally screwed up?

@bmh Check the number you are entering to see if it has 18 digits (I'm assuming you are not looking at your original paperwork).  Maybe you wrote it down wrong???

Curps are 18 digits.  The first 2 are the first 2  letters of you last name.

The next digit I ***think**** may have to do with maternal name (for us, it's an X on each of ours).

The next digit is the first letter of your first name.

The next 6 digits are your date of birth (2 each for yr, month, day, in that order).

The next digit is either an M or H (mujer or hombre).

The next 5 digits after your sex, are alpha and I think have to do with being an extranjero???

The last 2 digits are numeric and I think are computer generated
