Outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Brazil

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The coronavirus vaccine developed by China's Sinovac Biotech showed a general efficacy of less than 60% in its late-stage trial in Brazil, a news website reported on Monday, citing two people who seen the results.

Sao Paulo's Butantan biomedical center, which partnered with Sinovac to test and produce the vaccine in Brazil, dismissed the report as "purely speculative" as it prepares to release a more complete set of results on Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. (1545 GMT).

Medical experts and regulators criticized what they called an incomplete disclosure of study results last week."

Outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), in Sao Paulo

By Eduardo Simões

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - A coronavirus vaccine developed by China's Sinovac Biotech was just 50.4% effective at preventing symptomatic infections in a Brazilian trial, researchers said on Tuesday, barely enough for regulatory approval and well below the rate announced last week.

The latest results are a major disappointment for Brazil, as the Chinese vaccine is one of two that the federal government has lined up to begin immunization during the second wave of the world's second-deadliest COVID-19 outbreak."

Several scientists and observers blasted the Butantan biomedical center for releasing partial data just days ago that generated unrealistic expectations. The confusion may add to skepticism in Brazil about the Chinese vaccine, which President Jair Bolsonaro has criticized, questioning its "origins.""

Will be longer than first thought, thanks to AMLO's agreeing to delay more Pfizer doses.

MEX will now have to rely more on the unproven vaccines from Russia and China.

Mexico aims to make up for Pfizer vaccine shortfall with others
By Reuters Staff

MEXICO CITY, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday the government aimed to compensate for a reduction in deliveries of COVID-19 vaccine doses from Pfizer Inc with those from other providers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday it was in advanced talks with Pfizer about including its vaccine in the agency’s portfolio of shots to be shared with poorer countries.

Mexico had been expecting weekly deliveries of some 400,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine developed with Germany’s BioNTech SE . As a result of the U.S. drugmaker’s WHO agreements, Mexico would for now only be receiving half that total, Lopez Obrador told a regular news conference.

It was not clear how long the reduction would last. Pfizer did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is currently the only one being administered in Mexico, which has reported the fourth-highest death toll from the pandemic worldwide.

Mexico has also signed deals to acquire vaccines from Britain’s AstraZeneca Plc and China’s CanSino Biologics . Mexico has approved the AstraZeneca shot and expects to have it by March. It is still reviewing the CanSino vaccine.

Lopez Obrador also noted Mexico was about to complete its review of a Russian vaccine, and would soon have it available, an apparent reference to the Sputnik V product.

Mexico suffered a setback to its drive to inoculate the public with the news over the weekend that the official in charge of the program, Miriam Veras Godoy, had stepped down for personal reasons, according to the health ministry.

Mexico has approved 3 vaccines at this time;  Pfizer, Moderna, and AstroZenca.

Mexico has received as of Sunday the17th 545,975 doses of Pfizer and vaccinated 464,708 people. Those vaccinated so far are medical personnel & "servers of the nation"

Today Tuesday 19th Mexico will receive 219,350 more doses of Pfizer vaccine. The next shipment is planned for February 15 as Pfizer will have a delay at their production plant in Belgium that will cause a few days .

Also other shipments originally scheduled before Feb 15th for Mexico will be delayed as those allotments will go to poorer countries.

Many countries have signed agreements for many different vaccines, however those commitments are based on that country approving the vaccine.

Rather confusing info released by Brazil on this Chinese vaccine.  BTW, this is NOT the same vaccine that MEX has contracted with China for doses.  The one in Brazil is the CoronaVac vaccine made by Sinovac Biotech.  Mexico's contract is for the CanSino vaccine from CanSino Biologics.

Brazilian health officials say a Chinese coronavirus vaccine has demonstrated an overall efficacy rate of 50 per cent, far lower than originally indicated in a blow to one of the Latin American nation’s hopes for defeating the pandemic.

The São Paulo-based Butantan Institute said last week that the CoronaVac vaccine, developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech, was 78 per cent effective at preventing mild infections, and 100 per cent effective for moderate and serious cases that require hospitalisation or intensive care.

However, following criticism over a lack of transparency and details in the results, the institute announced fuller data on Tuesday that showed that CoronaVac’s general efficacy rate fell to 50.4 per cent when “very mild” cases were included.

A level of 50 per cent is widely considered the minimum threshold for a vaccine to be considered viable. While just above that, the data still casts doubt over a flagship Chinese initiative to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Delays.

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=es&tl=en&u=https://www.informador.mx/mexico/COVID-Lopez-Gatell-admite-retraso-de-vacunas-hasta-el-15-de-febrero-20210118-0080.html?fbclid%3DIwAR2iGf79CqhbshFghwBP-6bltlyTHLKiANCqZt2gqO6vDYlpW-wF8iZvqAU

The undersecretary of health, Hugo López-Gatell explained that in addition to the 50% reduction in the shipment of Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19 that arrives in Mexico this Tuesday, the next three deliveries will be delayed until February 15.

This is due to Mexico's decision to reduce the delivery of vaccines to be delivered to other countries, as well as the need for Pfizer to adjust its shipments for technical adjustments in the Belgian manufacturing plant.

Thus, the shipment of Pfizer vaccines against the coronavirus that arrives in Mexico this Tuesday will be 219,350 doses instead of the 439,725 originally scheduled.

The official explained that the doses of the Pfizer vaccine cover the second dose of the health personnel who already received the first, although he said that a technical committee is studying the feasibility of delaying the application of the second dose from 21 to 28 days to allow greater coverage with available vaccines.

My understanding is that countries were asked by the UN to allocate some of their contracted vaccine to poorer countries.  Mexico agreed to that.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/mexico-says-its-ok-with-getting-less-pfizer-vaccine-for-now/2021/01/17/63ef3bf0-592b-11eb-a849-6f9423a75ffd_story.html

MEXICO CITY — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Sunday that his government has agreed with a U.N. proposal to delay shipments of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine to countries like Mexico that had existing purchase agreements, in order to get more doses to poorer countries quicker.

López Obrador said the delayed shipments would be made up later.

“Anyway, that won’t change our plan, because we are already seeking out other vaccines,”’ López Obrador said, referring to the AstraZeneca vaccine as well as the Chinese CanSino and Russian Sputnik V vaccines, neither of which has been approved for use yet. “We are going to have enough vaccines.”

  • 3 weeks later...

Interesting article in this weeks GR that 2nd jab for health works has been delayed, that they will not receive their 2nd shot within the 21-28 window!..BUT  "The World Health Organization accepts that some countries face "exceptional" circumstances in which case the interval between does may extend up to 42 days".....Hmmmm

Also mentioned that the USA has inoculated 7.1% of its population, Canada 2.3% and Mexico 0.3%. I can understand Mexico lagging behind , but what's not happening in Canada??

Mexico gets AstraZeneca doses from India, expects more Pfizer, as it prepares for next phase

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines arrive in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico received a shipment of 870,000 doses of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine from India on Sunday, the government said, as the country prepares to prioritize older adults in the next phase of its vaccination campaign.

Mexico is also expecting shipments of Pfizer's vaccine to resume, with 494,000 doses due to arrive on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard told a news conference.

Sunday's shipment amounts to about 42% of the two million doses of the AstraZeneca and Oxford University vaccine the country plans to import from India, in addition to packaging it locally, the government said.

Mexico will next vaccinate adults over the age of 60, a group representing 12% of Mexico's 126 million people, between February and April."
