NATIONAL PRIORITY PLAN FOR COVID VACCINATIONS IN MEXICO RELEASED

Please note that while this article uses the term “Mexicans” it is unlikely to exclude legal residents. Mexico does not discriminate against legal residents and I believe it is unconstitutional to discriminate based on national origin. Also it will be free. 🙂

National vaccination plan against COVID in Mexico: these are the five stages of the plan, from December 2020 to March 2022

8 December 2020, 08:53

The date was set last week: now Mexico makes official the national vaccination plan against COVID-19 that details that the vaccination will begin this same month of December and the coverage goal will be at least 75% of the population of 16+ years, which should be reached by the end of 2021.

However, vaccination is contemplated until March 2022 . There are five stages of vaccination in total, in which different population groups are considered. The vaccination stages with dates for their completion are the following:

Stage 1 from December 2020 to February 2021
Stage 2 from February to April 2021
Stage 3 from April to May 2021
Stage 4 from May to June 2021
Stage 5 from June 2021 to March 2022

The order of priority of population groups to receive the vaccine is as follows:

1 Healthcare workers
2 People 80 and over
3 People aged 70 to 79
4 People from 60 to 69
5 People from 50 to 59
6 People from 40 to 49
7 Population under 40 years

The first vaccines arrive next week

If all goes according to plan, the first Pfizer vaccines will arrive in the last days of the third week of December, with immediate applications to the first priority group. 107,500 doses will be applied in CDMX and 17,500 in Coahuila , and at this time two more application centers are being studied, although their location was not disclosed.

The distribution logistics will be in charge of the Mexican armed forces and health sector institutions. Only healthcare personnel on the frontline of COVID-19 will receive these vaccines.

The undersecretary of prevention and health promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, assured that all Mexicans will receive the respective vaccine, but that it is essential that certain population groups receive the vaccine first in order to control the number of deaths promptly.

Stages two to five of vaccination will be from February 2021, where there will be specific locations determined by the secretary of health. In all cases the vaccine will be free.

At this moment the vaccine opens a horizon of hope because the vaccine allows us to have a very radical turn of which are the instruments that can be used in combination for a more effective control of this epidemic.

Mexico's three pre-purchase agreements

Mexico has signed agreements with CanSinoBIO, Pfizer and AstraZeneca . The pre-order agreement with CanSinoBIO is for 35 million doses, at the rate of one dose per patient. With Pfizer the agreement is for up to 35.5 million doses at a rate of two doses per patient and finally the pre-purchase agreement with AstraZeneca is for 77.4 million doses, also with two doses per patient.

All of them will contribute so that from January to March one million per month will reach Mexico. In April, which is when stage three begins, the figure is expected to skyrocket to 12 million.

In the specific case of CanSino, talks have advanced and it is expected that this week the final contract for the 35 million doses will be signed. The vaccine will be packaged in Mexico and the doses would be delivered from January to September 2021. The filing for approval is expected to be submitted to Cofepris in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the AstraZeneca vaccine will be delivered to Mexico from March or April 2021 .

CanSino BIO already has phase 3 trials in 16 states across the country. Janssen, meanwhile, has trials in four centers in three states.

Additionally, Mexico has collaboration with COVAX, the WHO vaccine portfolio through which doses will be distributed equitably to countries around the world. 18 vaccines are part of the World Health Organization vaccines that Mexico will receive through PAHO. It remains to be known which of the 18 vaccines Mexico will receive.

Interesting, but when and where do we go for the vaccine. If it's at your local IMSS clinic , based on current experience they will be out of stock and have no provision for storage. I think Wal-Mart could handle the logistics better!

A good question.
