Emotional Support Animals Banned from Flying in the Passenger Cabin by the US DOT & FAA

Recommended Posts

The USA's DOT and FAA announced today,
No more "Emotional support animals" on any flights. They must be paid for & flown in only the cargo section.

Per PBS Newshour tonight: They updated their official policy to ONLY allow certified official service dogs - for people with disabilities (ADA defined) and with mental disabilities.Service dogs for the blind ... are allowed."Emotional Support animals".. are prohibited

Why?? ... Because many many USA-nians brought turtles, lizards and even peacocks onto flights for free - as "Emotional Support animals" ... Why?? They were unsafe - biting other passengers, urinating on the floor, running around disrupting the safety of the other passengers.

For the people who think this is still up to the airlines ... The PBS report clearly said "The FAA" and "US DOT" ruled today to prohibit them.

" The (US Department of Transportation) agency said Wednesday that it was rewriting the rules partly because passengers carrying unusual animals on board “eroded the public trust in legitimate service animals.”

"It also cited the increasing frequency of people “fraudulently representing their pets as service animals,” and a rise in misbehavior by emotional-support animals, ranging from peeing on the carpet to biting other passengers."

*** "The new rule will force passengers with emotional-support animals to check them into the cargo hold — and pay a pet fee — or leave them at home." ***

It's about time. These days everyone who wants to bring Foofoo with them everywhere just claims that he's a emotional support animal. It's totally out of hand. What's really unconscionable is that there are people with documented PTSD, and other ailments, who really do need those animal companions. But the entitled, lying pet owners ruin things for everyone.

The emotional support animal claim is a bane for Airbnb and other short term rental hosts. Guests will show up with an untrained puppy that urinates and defecates in the house, chews things up and which they will leave locked in the house for hours on end while they go out and about, yet claim it's a service animal. Real service animals are highly trained and don't do things like that, plus they are with their owners all the time.

People with severe emotional issues probably shouldn’t be hurtling through space at 500 miles an hour at 35,000 feet in a sealed tin can.

We cannot judge that for others as we don't know what their issue is and may have nothing to do with a confined space.

Are you unable to read what was posted? "Only certified official service dogs". That is a animal which performs specific tasks for their owners. You can no longer just say your dog is a service dog or emotional support animal because you put some little vest on them and have them in the cabin.

This is addressed to the web boards very own fact checker and enforcer. I am so happy you have taken the time out of your so very busy life to correct those posts which you deem to have been posted by illiterates. However in your comment you allude to things which I never posted or implied. It is time for you to correct your attitude and belief that you exist to rudely chastise and correct all those you deem to post incorrectly on these life and death matters.

Luvsdawgs is right. "Only Dogs Count as Service Animals on Planes, US Rules". Yes there are additional restrictions on what counts as a service animal. No more free flights for emotional support lizards or cats or cute little dogs who are "emotional support" animals without any training or certification.

This relates only to animals who were flying free as support animals and who often didn't meet the qualifications of animals who can fly in-cabin on a plane. Pets can still fly in-cabin as long as they meet the airline's qualifications and pay for the privilege.
