Ménière’s disease

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I will be visiting Ajijic for a week and while I am there I plan to take MRI of my inner ear for Ménière’s disease. As a visitor not a resident how much would I be charged ?
I am sure it will cost half of what the lab in US would charge me a whooping $1400 usd.  Please advise. I am also looking for a cervical (Blair) chiropractor if there’s any in Ajijic .

Thanks in advance!

I don't think anyone will be able to answere this question, for obvious reasons (although residency vs tourist is not an issue, because you won't be dealing with the government-controlled health services, obviously). But there are people on this board who have been to various local hospitals and labs (I have not) who would be able to provide you with contact information so you can phone them.

Those that can Google are able:

While I did not see an obvious choice for the ear, most studies are less than 4,000 pesos. The cost includes a radiologist's report.

I had an MRI of my knee 2 weeks ago......obviously a totally different MRI......but the cost was $240 US at a lab in Guadalajara and they have the 3.0 tesla magnetic field set up. I am sorry but I don't know the expense for the MRI of the inner ear. If you find the doctor you want to see they will be able to tell you the cost of that specific procedure I am sure.

I really appreciate all your responses. I will reach out to Chopo lab for the quote. Thanks!

It’s quite the automated system Chopo has now.  They have a central number for all locations.  They do have an extensive list online of all the tests they do but not being familiar with all the terms, I found it difficult to navigate.  Maybe the route to take is to find your specialist first.  It’s been my experience, some doctors or specialist here will offer you a phone or Skype consultation if you’re outside of Mexico right now.  Best wishes to you.

Gosh really in dollars and not pesos?

Well.....since the OP is in the US, will be visiting the area for one week, mentioned the out of pocket expense they would have to pay in US dollars in the US, it seemed that giving them the figure in US dollars might be helpful. Perhaps you could have converted it for them if you take issue with it.....gosh really!

Jennifer. I am just gong through test for a sudden loss of hearing so I have been seen audiologist, otorinos etc..  My recommendation  to you is to go to Guadaljara for your test Bañueño is a little higher than chopo but s also  better.

An appointment with a specialist is aroung 900 pesos in Guadaljara as well as Ajijic.  I am gong to go to Guadaljara  for a treatment of the ear to try to recuparate some hearing so I will be going to Guadaljara  within the next 2 weeks to see doctors.. I speak fluent Spanish if you  need help let me know..

What is the name of the MRI you need, I can ask Bañuelos how much they charge.  You can pay with your US debit card or credit card.

Send me your email via PM and we can continue this conversation privately.

The lab I had my MRI done in gave me a DVD with the full scan on it as well as 171 separate images so a US Dr. would easily be able to use them. They did have numerous English speaking technicians and receptionists there as well just as an FYI. 1790630156_RioLab.thumb.jpg.c81b5f938276e1902b928dbb3a260c6c.jpg

Just for info purposes, I had experienced a sudden loss of hearing a few years ago. Although it may very well have nothing to do with your problem, in my case, I had just been prescribed an anti-inflammatory for a back issue and had been taking it for a few days, which seriously lowered my blood pressure. I have low blood pressure anyway, so I shouldn't have been prescribed that. As soon as I stopped taking it, my hearing came back.

Which ant - inflamatory was it? I have taken various because of the back issue I have. When I lost  my hearing I was so dizzy that I could not stand nor sit so they took me by ambulance to San Antonio.. I had low blood pressure there when I usually have normal to a little high blood pressure.

I am not on ani inflammatory medecine no more,,, and my hearing is still gone.. I did a CT Scann and an audioñogy test and the doctor  is recommending a 5 weeks treatment.. the type where they inject cortison  in the ear..  She suspect a virus.. but of course who knows..

Most hearing loss is not complete. It is more of understanding what is said to because some frequencies are lost. That is why if you get a hearing aid it is not just an amplifier (all though, those are for sale too, very inexpensive) but corrects the missing frequencies.

Injections sound scary. I had a difficult bout with an inner ear infection, dizziness, etc. It is hard to treat the inner ear, not easy to access. What worked for me was a strong nasal sprayer with colloidal silver solution. Colloidal silver has no taste, it is one of the few antibiotics which can kill Staphoccus Aurelias. This staph is responsible for up to 40% of ear or sinus infections. The alternative is treating the whole body with antibiotics, most of which are now not effective against staph.

Edit: I should have added that I put a very small quantity of black salt with the rinse. It has a lot of sulphur but is kind of obscure and hard to find. Mail order only.

Metamizol.  The thing was, I always research any medication before I would take it, and I saw that there were warnings about it sometimes lowering blood pressure to dangerous levels. Because I normally have super low blood pressure, I called the chiropractor who had prescribed it, and he assured me that it was nothing to worry about. So I started taking it, but when my hearing became muffled after 3 days on it, I called him back to tell him that, and you should have heard how panicked he sounded. He told me to stop taking it immediately, which of course I already had.

I have no idea how such things work, but maybe my hearing came back right away because I'd only been taking it for 3 days- perhaps that medication also caused your hearing loss but since you took it for longer, it's done something more permanent to your hearing? And your issue may be totally unrelated to the medication or blood pressure, but it's an angle worth looking at.

It is very kind of you. My problem with ear started with tinnitus some 8years ago on and off when I am under stress. I noticed difficulty understanding low voices about three years ago but not significant. The fullness of the left ear start to develop last year and I felt like I was under the water all the time.
Still I didn’t seek medical help until recently when I noticed that my speech recognition of the left ear went down significantly and more pressure build up in the ear accompanied with dizziness.

Well, now I am diagnose with Ménière’s disease. Other than giving the symptoms a name, diagnosis doesn’t really help with anything.
I just started taking Flavonoids tablet hoping to relieve tinnitus.
I just hope that it is not too late to recover some of my hearing.

My problem started one month ago.. I suddenly fell and could not even sit without falling on my back , I had nausea, the walls were spinning, I had cold sweat and  had no balance so I was taken to the hospital by ambulance , they did a ct scan of the brain and I had no lesions ,, stayed 3 days in the hospital and received cortisoids amongst other things.. Now that the doctors saw the audiometry resutlts they think it is worth doing the cortesoids directly in the inner ear. That is done in a hospital where they have the equipments and they think that after 5 onjections I  may or may not recover my earing.. of course no guarranty.. I am going to do it.. because I want to see if they can do somethgn..  am better but still do not have my balance back and I have clicking sounds in my left ear so , I am going to go for it.

I will be going to Guadaljara every thursday for 5 weeks and I hired a driver because I am not comfortable driving there not hearing from the left side.. All the sounds come from my right so I have no idea where  the sounds actually come from. My hearing on the right is super good so I pick up everything from the right ear.. I am going to go and get the shots from an otorino in Santa Teresita in Guadaljara at Hospital Arista.. so if you need to get to Guadalajara, I will be going there..

It is not easy to get an appontment n Ajjic with an otorino.. There is one who comes to Quality care every wednesday but you need to make appointment ahead if yo want to get in and he is moving  to the medical center  n Sn Antonio this week so that may be a problem. There is another one at another clinic I will not even mention. I can tell you why via PM and there is one who comes to the San Antonio Hospital but Dr Garcia there told me to go and see her when I got out of the hospital , I called to see at what time and no one ever bothered to call me back so I told Dr. Garcia I would not deal with their otorino.. That left me with Guadaljara.  I went to a Dr.. who is audiologist Dr. Janeth Valenzuela Becerra who did the audiology test The test and consultation cost me 900 pesos

The otorino from Quality care in Ajjic got me an appointment with another otorino  who does the injectons in the ear.. His name is Dr. Gabriel Paz and he works out of the Hospital Arista in Santa Teresita.. I am going there tomorrow for the first time.

I am sending this info to you in case you need it when you are here.. If you are interested in getting together send me your phone number or info by PM.. For some reason I coud not PM you.  No matter what , good luck to you, it is no fun to of tinnitus and get dizzy..
