Jubilacion
I've been reading contradictory info online.... is there an open Monday Market? Is it at Sunrise Restaurant or other? Gracias in advance! 🇲🇽
desafinada
There are 2 different markets that are referred to as the Monday market. In Chapala there is the tienguis which is like the one in Ajijic on Wednesday but bigger. It is near Sorianna. There is also a market of mostly prepared food that is at Sunrise Restaurant. Someone who has been there recently might be able to better describe the products.
Bisbee Gal
The Monday Tianguis in Chapala is a traditional Mexican market. The one in Riberas on Monday is mostly prepared foods, aimed more at gringo customers. The Ajijic Tianguis is Wednesday on Calle Revolucion, starting at the carretera and heading south. There is a Tuesday market that has a lot of organic vendors, but also prepared foods. Mostly gringo attendees though there are both MXN and gringo vendors. Each market serves a purpose. Try them all!
cedros
There are also two Thursday Tianguis. One in San Juan Cosala, the other in Jocotepec. I rarely go to the Tianguis so I better recheck the dates. SJC could be Tuesday.
Jubilacion
FOLLOW-UP REPORT.... We found the Chapala Monday Market (a traditional Mexican market) just a block south of Soriana on the west side of the street. It's bigger than it first looks with small taco food vendors most well received by the crowd; clothes, sundries pollo, pescado and fruits and vegetables. Some good some not. It's about the same size or maybe a little larger as the one in Ajijic on Wednesdays. Hands down we both preferred Ajijic Market. May try Chapala again sometime if we find ourselves over that way, but no special trip for us from SJC. We did swing by Sunrise Restaurant after Chapala Market close to noon so we may ave missed the best of it, but did seem like a lot of prepared foods. May give this one a try again. They were going to close at 12:30 so we were late to the party. Thanks for the help, all.

The Chapala tianguis is 4-5 times larger than the one in Ajijic which has some but much fewer vendors all from Chapala. So that you keep from confusing yourself,it's tianguis in Spanish and market is mercado and there is a big difference.
Jubilacion
Well, we are new here and that's a good point. So we went to something in Chapala yesterday (a tianguis I will now assume) and it was only the same size or slightly bigger (not even 2x bigger) than the mercado/tianguis on Wednesday's in Ajijic heading south on Calle Revolution from the carretera. Is there another tianguis in Chapala bigger in a different location than the one we attended? Maybe this was a competing event?

Tianguis are not EVENTS,they are permanent on the day that they operate. Since covid 19 both have shrunk. Under normal circumstances the Chapala tianguis is 4-5 times larger. No, Chapala tianguis is probably the biggest on the north shore. I took these fotos[a very small sampling] during better times. Yes I understand that you're newbies and I also see by your many question posts where a lot of us long timers here are trying to help you and as well as arguing and not accepting our experience you seem to want to put your own spin on things by assuming to what you wish to hear instead of what is. Like: "Maybe this was a competing event?"

Jubilacion
From your descriptions it still makes a jog north, but not as big as you've described from pre-covid.

FYI Chapala Tianguis is (when in full swing) 700-800 meters in length whereas the Ajijic Tianguis is about 300 mtrs long. Comparing Chapala to Ajijic is like comparing apples to oranges. Chapala and Ajijic have some of the same vendors but in Ajijic they may get to charge more due to the clientele. You want traditional go to Chapala, SJC or Joco.
CHILLIN
There is also a tianguis in Ixtlahucan de Membrillos on Sundays, there must be one in Tjamulcos de Zuniga. These are both small towns near to Chapala. By the time you figure out how to pronounce them, you will be there! Their products are more local and specialised - such as green herbs/edibles from the mountains, quince fruit products, woven horse hair bracelets, etc.
Mostlylost
Small correction.... Tlajomulco de Zúñiga is not a small town near Chapala. It is a municipality with a population close to half a million. We invite you to enjoy the traditions of Tlajomulco. Every Saturday, in the Main Square of Cabecera, we will install our cultural tianguis. Come and consume our local products and enjoy a pleasant afternoon with your family. Try our traditional snacks and get to know the temples of San Antonio de Padua and the Immaculate Conception that belong to the Franciscan Route. It is intended to make known the origin of the foundation of the municipality, its cultural abundance and traditions to integrate, through this wealth , to the new inhabitants of the municipality and to reinforce the Tlajomulca pride in the inhabitants of origin. As well as, increase tourism and the detonation of the economy, through our gastronomy and culinary products, joining this popular festival. bmh
In this area the weekly markets are called tianguis and the markets in fixed buildings that are open every day are called mercado. In Chiapas all markets fixed or ambulant are called mercado . Wether Ajijic or Chapala all the merchandise comes from the same place the abasto which is the wholesale / retail market in Guadalajara. If you go to both you will notice the same merchants the difference is that the Chapala tianguis is much larger and does not have artesania.

I was just there, you have not been, what's your issue? I was 100% AGREEING WITH YOU in my post that COVID must have changed the vendor dynamics because right now, not 8 months ago and not 12 months from now, but last Monday, the length of the two Tiangius are about the same. That's it. Nothing else. I only know what I have seen, I have no history pre-COVID. I apologize if you took offense and misinterpreted my comment, I am not correcting you or anyone else just reporting what I saw firsthand. Excellent pictures by the way. 4

bmh
The fight over the tianguis from Chapala and the one from Ajijic is pe´retty silly, Chapala is a large version of Ajijic minus the artesania but more of the same does not make it more traditional or better.. All the stuff comes from the abastos and is the same as what you get in the storsas well.. I have given up on going to either one now that the stores have a better selection of veggies and that we have good meat, poltry and fish markets in the stores.... The Ajijic tianguis seem to have a bunch of gringos that go there to socialize same as the Tuesday amrket.. and the Chapala has lots of Mexican who go there to buy basic food a.. After you have been here a long time they both lose their atraction...Give me the markets or tiangus, in Patzcuaro, Guadalajara, San Cristobal and Oaxaca any day..

AndyPanda
I go to the Monday tianguis in Chapala for a bigger selection of items, better prices, and because I need the exercise. 2
