Where to cash a U.S. check?

Recommended Posts

I'm not so sure you can just walk into a bank branch and cash a check. If you have an account you can deposit a check where the funds will be held for many days until it clears. The bank has no way to verify the availability of funds to cover the check.

Intercam may have different rules. Perhaps CI Banco does too but I remember having to set up a BBVA account in order to cash a check issued by an insurance company in Mexico.

If your bank mailed a new card to you, you can forget about ever seeing it.   What works is having them send it down by FedEx or DHL and send to IShop rather than to your home.  If there are two of you on the acct. I would suggest getting two cards just for times like this.

I use Actinver Bank in Ajijic. The last time I deposited a US dollar check with them was maybe 5 or 6 years ago. And at that time it would take 28 days for the check to clear, before I could have those funds. These days I don't get checks down here, and when I want additional funds I wait until I am up north and have my Bank of America account wire any needed funds to my Actinver Account which takes maybe a day or two before it clears in my Actinver Bank Account.

We have an account at Intercam and write a cheque from our Canadian account when we need a higher balance here again. Our Intercam acct. is immediately credited that day even though it takes 5-10 business days for Intercam to receive the funds through their exchange house. What great service ,eh! As to getting new credit/debit cards  from our Scotiabank acct.,they Fedex them directly to our house here at no charge. If you have a bank in the US or Canada that doesn't do that, get a new bank.
