Hospitals in Mexico City are nearing saturation point after they received 100 more Covid-19 patients requiring intubation in just two days, newspaper El Norte reported, citing Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

Of the city’s 16 municipalities, the most affected is Iztapalapa. The General Hospital there is at capacity and is turning away patients, Sheinbaum said. As more people are redirected to the two other hospitals in the same neighborhood, they’re also now full. The city, which is home to 8.8 million people, had 2,299 cases as of yesterday and 178 deaths. The country reported 650 deaths and 7,497 confirmed cases.

Mexico was slow to implement measures in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Less than a month ago, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was posting videos of himself surrounded by children, and urging citizens to go out and visit restaurants. The country has now started to react. While it says it has tested more people, Mexico’s ratio of deaths to confirmed cases is the highest in Latin America, suggesting it’s not doing enough in identifying cases.

Gringohombre have you looked at the COVID stats for Mexico City, which is where the articles are referring to.  2.41M worldwide at the moment and I expect the US will hit 800k next week.
Check this map out https://datos.covid-19.conacyt.mx/fHDMap/muni.php?fbclid=IwAR2Df5sGRYnxY4zeBZyDoosD3AbEm6EYJ2q3RCX00d0ZZ78n_5TbwbXgQQo

Well, of the 892 new cases reported worldwide on Sunday, Mexico accounted for 764 of them. Also topped the world in new coronavirus deaths. Not exactly a record to be proud of.

I think you need to check your numbers and edit your post.  On 4/18 NY alone had more than 4000 new cases.

Remember that testing is ramping up by the day, this means that all cases reported as new should be viewed as newly discovered OR newly infected.

Mexico is still way down the list in the world.

In New York, statistics ONLY cover those people who have been hospitalized.

Ridiculous. Time for a Google.

I made these screenprints from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-cases/

Supports the 764 for Mexico, but worldwide is 20,214 for same date.  MEX did not top world in new deaths either.

I have 3 doctor friends in Mexico who correspond with me regarding the virus, one in DF, one in Cuernavaca and one working in a hospital on secondment in Monterrey. They all confirmed this: they are directed to only count Covid deaths if the patient was tested IN a hospital before they died. Anyone arriving dead or dying is not counted. Therefore, any of your neighbors could die from the virus and not be counted but be a source of infection. Clearly there is a significant undercount in Mexico. While Mexico is often described as a place where expats go to die, I suspect there aren't any of you who would like to go via this disease. Those who refuse to educate themselves, believe in the advice of science or take precautions will shuffle off this not fake mortal coil. Adios.

That's excellent Bisbee, thanks for posting it.

All of this has to be viewed in the context of the level of testing.  The impression I get from all of the data is there is an unknown, potentially very large, number of undetected cases showing few or no symptoms, or in some of the countries simply not the medical infrastructure to determine and treat as many cases as others.

The data for this situation really illustrate how numbers can create different results and impressions.  For example there are a number of new studies in the U.S. and China which indicate that when the mild/carrier cases are factored in, the death rate drops well below one percent and starts to mirror the historic data for some of the worst outbreaks like SARS.

The general death rate in Mexico is so high it might lead one to suspect the under reporting is also very high.  There are no reports of it here locally but one has to wonder if that is a result of the lack of reporting, testing and detection.

Up to 36 hours arrest for violations, per this story https://www.lagodechapala.com/blog/up-to-36-hours-of-arrest-for-leaving-without-justification/

Quote

Up to 36 hours of administrative arrest may be received by anyone who fails to comply with the mandatory social isolation measures announced by the State Government to prevent COVID-19 infections.

According to the agreement published by the governor in the Official State Newspaper , which comes into effect this Monday, those who do not heed the call to stay home, go out only to essential activities and wearing face masks on public roads, will be awarded the penalties established in the General and State Health Laws, which range from a warning to administrative arrest for 36 hours. The municipal authorities will be responsible for verifying compliance with sanitary security measures.

And just who determines what essential activities are?

Inquiring minds want to know.  :D

The governor of Jalisco has posted the rules.  They are available here in various posts. Also information  here:  https://coronavirus.jalisco.gob.mx/

Yesterday on his video it was obvious he is mad at the behavior of the people in GDL especially. Thus the rules are stronger. Only out of the house for essential reasons. Wear masks in all public places & buildings.

and this in El Informador Newspapper

They warn that any person who is in the state territory, whether resident or passing through, must compulsorily comply with the domiciliary protection.

Strict mandatory confinement applies to groups at higher risk such as people over 60, pregnant or postpartum women, patients diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic heart or lung disease, immuno suppression, with kidney or liver failure.

I don't know why people are posting the same "rules" over and over and over again, even in the same thread. Especially when they are leaving out the best part, which clearly states:

All individuals have the right to eat and the right to health protection under the heading "Exceptions to Stay at Home Order—right to buy food, medicine and see doctor".

In case you missed it in another thread, this is what the Expat Liaison Hector Espana posted after meeting with Moy.  If you go to the Expat Liaison FB page, Hector has also answered specific questions people asked him.

This is the official interpretation for Chapala of the rules put out by the governor, effective for today
1. Isolation to be enforced. No fines to be applied unless gross noncompliance is observed.
2. Go out ONLY if strictly necessary.
3. Population at risk, do not go out on foot.
4. Only essential activities allowed
5. No groups over 10 as previously stated for Chapala municipality.
6. ALL public spaces are closed.
7. Follow all sanitary recommendations,I.e.distancing
8. Wear masks whenever out of house. Checking on in car made case for drivers vision.
9. Fines are up to the Mayor. None in Chapala at this time.
10. Penalities are up to the Mayor and will be announced before implementation.

ALL other rumors are just that. Please ignore. Remember we love and want to protect our elders. It is a Mexican thing!
Hector
