Are the doctors in?

I met with my former General Hospital specialist just yesterday. She said Seguro Popular is still providing limited coverage and not to ignore renewals. Public hospitals are emergency only right now. The community clinics are a different concept, preventative approach. So I imagine they are open and practising as usual, many of the doctors are serving their year social service for which they are paid slave wages. I am sure they just want to get their time in so they can get their Cedula. But if you need more hospital tests, that are considered elective or non- critical you are out of luck until the quarantine is lifted. Private hospitals may pickup the slack, they are in it purely for profit anyways, but they are supposed to be emergency only as well, keeping beds available unless there is an uptick in cases.

Seguro stll sees patients enrolled under Seguro. I had surgery through Seguro  6 weeks ago in Joco. This was before the alarm bells all sounded. However, I will not go back for follow up visits as it is an emergency only facility now. Unless I had a genuine emergency, I would not visit any doctor at this time (and I do have a private pay doc who I like a lot). I am (ahem) staying home as instructed.

I agree that a good relationship with a local doctor, especially a specialist internist, is a very good idea at the best of times. I met mine in private practice 4 or 5 years ago. I knew she only came here part time because of her management positions at a general hospital in Guadalajara. I had an appointment to see her yesterday to have two batches, in two wounds, of over 20 stitches to be removed, one batch over a week overdue. When I got up, my foot was swollen and over the past three days, so painful that today it was excruciating. I knew I couldnt get up the stairs to the already booked taxi and I was worried that I had Phlebitis or a blood clot. She agreed to a house call, on her way into work. She has made a housecall before and knows we are carefully self quarantining, and knows Ms. Chillin has over 40 years experience in health care management. Make a long story short, she determined that my foot had sustained some broken bones, which can occur just from normal walking, removed my stitches, went back to work, found a used aircast from one of her other patients, came back the house, made sure it fitted so I can stumble in for xrays, adjusted my medications again ( back on blood thinners again as a precaution). Cost? 1,000 pesos for the visit, 250 pesos for the aircast. Best doctor I have ever had, email if you want her name ( but I doubt if she will make housecalls to patients she doesn' t know well).

At Chapala's DIF today trying to renew I was told it was not possible because there was no Seguro Popular anymore.

I will have to ask my Dra. for more details. It seems that the Social Workers in these Public Hospitals know where to dig for funding, whether public or private reduced rates. They know much, much more than D.I.F. could ever know. It is different. If I went to my favorite general hospital, Zoquipan, say for a knee replacement ( although my Dra. says this would not be her first choice for orthopedic surgery), you would not only pay for the hardware, but also the rental of the equipment to perform it. On the other hand your operating fees and hospital fees would be negligible, or not at all.

What is the deal about Seguro Popular renewals? I was not aware that this was required but just took a at my policy and see at the top VALDEZ DE LA POLIZA 14 Sep. 2017 al 13 Sep. 2020. Anyone have any idea as to what to do to get continuing coverage after that? Gracias

I don' t know for sure, I think our policy has at least a couple of years left on it. I remember spending many hours trying to read their wall posters, and learning Spanish, from their so called promise to members. Maybe that is what is in play. To take a large group over people ( over 1.5 million) and cut short their policies, would seem to attract some legal and political flak. Can you imagine if your private insurer wrote that they no longer want to be in the car insurance business, and you are cut off as per the end of this month, even if you are prepaid for the year?

I know AMLO said this from his perch in CDMX. Do you know absolutely for sure that this memo reached the frontlines? There was a lot of money sitting in Seguro Popular coffers,. As corrupt and inefficient you might think Mexico is, I doubt if the executive branch, could empty a system setup by the house branch At least under the US federal system, they were able to do it as a " state of emergency". AMLO has declared no such thing, other than he wanted medical resources spread all over Mexico, and he appointed a team of low paid team of inexperienced eggheads to make that happen. The ones with years of experience were laid off, and then offered an insulting wage level if they wanted to work. Those people have gone into retirement, private sector, and even overseas. Senior medical administration is a very high demand field.

Mexico is not an anarchy nor a dictatorship, at this point anyways.
