My wife and I are back in Canada now under the mandatory 14 Day quarantine but would like to hear about the situation in Mexico but Ajijic in particular. We have many Can/US/Mexican friends in Ajijic we worry about. Does anyone have access to a website that would gives us local details, not just rumours?

Jalisco adds five other positive cases to COVID-19; reaches 86

Posted by admin on 28 March 2020 JALISCO

The state Ministry of Health details that the cases are concentrated in five municipalities: Zapopan, Guadalajara, Cuautla, Tomatlán and Teocuitatlán

This Saturday, the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) reported that they added five other positive cases to COVID-19, bringing the figure to 86 compared to the previous day. Four of them are asymptomatic, the agency reported.

The cases are concentrated in five municipalities: Zapopan , Guadalajara, Cuautla , Tomatlán and Teocuitatlán , making it clear that of the two cases reported by the municipal president of Tala, Enrique Buenrostro, only one was positive and did not belong to that municipality.

“It is clarified that when carrying out the corresponding study protocol, according to information from the Mexican Institute of Social Security ( IMSS ), currently there is only one confirmed case, which resides in Guadalajara, although it makes occasional visits and has its registration of this Institute in Tala. The patient is therefore a case of Guadalajara and not of Tala ”.

However, the authorities are already conducting an epidemiological investigation of the people with whom he had contact in Guadalajara and in that district.

The agency clarified that in the last 24 hours no new death has been confirmed in Jalisco, so the number of confirmed deaths remains at three.

In addition to those confirmed, the Ministry of Health has already ruled out 426 cases submitted to valid laboratory tests, while 209 remain in the process of studying pending their results.Of the 86 positive, sick and asymptomatic people, 90% have been ambulatory cases, that is, with mild symptoms and care in their homes . Only eight of these patients have required hospitalization and three have already been discharged for improvement; Three others died and only two remain hospitalized in a serious and delicate condition. One of them is in a private hospital and the other is in a Social Security clinic.

The SSJ reported that the State Epidemiological Surveillance System has studied suspicious cases in 57 municipalities of the State, of which only positive cases were confirmed in the five mentioned municipalities. "The highest proportion of infections occurs in males (56%) and the most affected age group is 50-54 years with a proportion of 15 percent."

Here at Lakeside, I continually ask Mexicans, do you know anyone who is sick? The response has been NO. I've heard of no one in the expat community who is sick. But we are still being cautious. Locally we seem to be well!

This should stir a few folks up, but a large group of us are relatively certain we already had the virus over the winter. In our cases, we were both sick for over two months and all our very competent doctor could tell us was that we had a virus. There are also groups in the U.S. filled with people who believe the same, and all of the members experienced prolonged illnesses outside the norm.

Yes, there are people who would like us to believe this started in a market in Wuhan, but we believe there is a good chance this is the result of biological warfare and the strains have been getting more and more virulent as it has been intentionally spread. Wuhan just happened to get a NOVEL coronavirus that spread across the world uncontrollably.

I'm not here to argue. I won't be back to read what the naysayers write. If I planted a seed that gets people to think, that's all that matters. Stay well and look out for yourselves.

I have a family member flying back to Ottawa on Tuesday, and we are both curious what you had to do. One of his U.S. legs was rerouted (automatically by the airlines), but he has been advised that Ottawa is NOT one of the four major cities allowing international air travel (although flights are arriving daily in Ottawa anyway), and that he will be subject to a mandatory quarantine... which means he can't go to his house, nor can his son pick him up at the airport. I'm trying to figure out (with zero input from the federal or prov. gov't) what might happen: are they putting people into hotels? There is almost no information from insurance companies or gov't agencies on any of this that we can find.

Found: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/latest-travel-health-advice.html?topic=tilelink

I think they have made an egregious mistake: mixing up the words quarantine and isolation.

Mike. We booked Delta vis Atlanta which got changed the day before we were leaving and had to rebook. This time the first leg of the flight became Aeromexico to Mexico City, then Delta to Detroit and Toronto. All legs of the flight were excellent ,on time and very low traffic. In Guadalajara, they took my wife’s temperature but not mine which surprised me. Mexico City airport was almost empty if you can imagine that. Check in and Customs workers were all wearing masks/gloves as expected. Same all the way through until we hit Toronto.

as We exited in Toronto Pearson, we were met by customs officers way down the corridor to ask us about where we were coming from, did we have any symptoms and were reminded about the 14 day mandatory  quarantine. They gave us a pamphlet with instructions. We then proceeded to the actual customs and were through in about 5/10 minutes. Th3 last leg from Detroit to Toronto there were only 12 passengers on the whole plane and eight of those were from Ajijic.

our kids drove two vehicles to the airport, met us on the shuttle bus lane at Pearson with the car running. We loaded our luggage, said hi to our daughter and son in law from about 8 feet and followed them back to our condo. We had planned initially to quarantine in a hotel as our youngest daughter rents our Condo but she was sent home to work.. we then sent her to the hotel for 14 days and we are in the Condo. We have absolutely no direct contact with family or neighbours. We go down to the lobby when our kids bring groceries. They leave the groceries inside the first set of doors then leave. We wave and retrieve our goodies. We wear our Ajijic José masks for our own protection which is primarily to Keep Your Hands off your face.

we don’t go shopping ourselves not even to a Timmy Drive-thru so you know how serious that is for a Canadian Tim’s junky. We are Day 4 and will probably at some point head out to the parking lot just to walk for exercise and fresh air. If we see someone on our side of the sidewalk, we will cross to the other side or at least maintain a safe distance. So far so good . Also, we are not experiencing any symptoms at all. We have a thermometer and take our temperature daily. Hope this helps.

I wonder about people wanting to go the other direction. Will Residente Permanentes who are NOB at present be allowed to return home to Mexico (by air of course).

I posted this elsewhere but it's applicable here as well:

Close friends just drove back to Ontario from Arizona where they spend the winter. As they crossed the border into Canada last Thursday, they were read the "riot" act... summarized, it said that they were to go home and stay home for a two week quarantine period. Failure to do so could result in a million dollar fine and/or jail time. The next day they got a text message reminding them of this obligation. Luckily, their daughter went shopping for them in advance of their arrival and stocked their fridge and pantry.

They (and Canada) are taking this very seriously. Protect yourselves and protect others by doing so.

A great spot to hear what is going on in Mexico and lakeside is the Facebook page "Chapala Health Talk". Kerry Watson gathers all the current data daily and posts it. It is a great resource:-)

My family all got a very strange "flu" after my kids flew here. We went to Manzanillo for 4 days and when we got back we all were sick and a variety of symptoms. For my husband and myself we had a severe dry cough that turned into lots of congestion after a few weeks and I am still coughing up thick crud after 2 full months. My husband started with lots of nausea and stomach pains. My 2 adult daughters had coughs and one had nausea. We all had fevers but not for long and not terribly severe. I was pretty sick for over 2 weeks, hardly could eat, nausea and no appetite. My 3 year old grandson had a cough, threw up for a couple of days and a fever for 3 days. The weirdest thing was my husband and my inability to smell anything for weeks. My symptoms were the most severe and definitely not like any cold/flu I had ever had. I still have a cough with sputum that is hard to cough up and sinus discharge every morning.

I don't believe for even a second that the Covid-19 virus is biological warefare, but I do wonder if somehow we were exposed to it somehow and that we have already had it. When there is a test available that can test for antibodies I would like to have it done to see if by any chance we did. Long shot I know and I am not espousing any conspiracy theories at all. My kids did fly however and perhaps they were on a flight with someone that had it. Manzanillo is a major shipping port and perhaps somehow we were exposed there. Of course there have not been any reported cases there so I know it is probably not the case but it was just such a different illness than we have ever had previously it just makes us wonder:/

Mike I should have added the quarantine is more rigid than self isolation. Because we were traveling we could not have contact with anyone including hotel staff so shifting our daughter to the hotel was the most efficient. We can actually cook etc while Robin can pick up meals for herself.

The last five days in Ajijic we were self isolating as part of the social distancing. We talked to neighbours from a distance with no handshaking etc. With quarantine we are avoiding everyone and wipe doorknobs, fridge door handles and surfaces wearing our masks even in the house.

Yesterday morning I watched a video made by a pulmonary specialist in a New York hospital as we speak. It was by far the most detailed explanation of what to do and why to absolutely avoid getting this virus. Masks and hand washing are absolutely key. I will try to figure out how to get it to this website.

Thanks for the detailed description. We were hoping the airports and plane legs would be far less busy, as you report. Since the family member in Ottawa has self-isolated and has no symptoms, and the returning family member has done the same (until the airport, of course) and has no symptoms, that may have some play there.

I was reading an article this morning from the St Catharines Standard regarding the handling of some 60,000 seasonal workers mainly from Mexico now arriving in Canada. From what I understand, it is the responsibility of each farmer to ensure workers are quarantined. For eleven years and in order to keep "busy" I drove an eighteen wheeler first to deliver wholesale nursing plants in April and May then to collect fruit from the various  coop growers from June to October. Hope this works out okay. By the way this job helped greatly to improve my command of Spanish.

Silent spreaders: You DON'T know if you are one so please wear a mask in public to protect yourselves and others.

Yes and you can order your masks from operation feed, the ladies of San Juan Cosala are seeing up a storm. There is a thread here entitled Masks. Please support this effort and let's see everyone daunting their masks in public. The Mexican community will take notice! Maybe buy a couple and give one to your favourite Mexican friend. I ordered 10. Least we can do to help even this tiny bit..
