Coronavirus in our area

Recommended Posts

I was just wanting to ask the community if anyone knows about the status of coronavirus in the state of Jalisco, and specifically in the Lake Chapala area. Please share any information that you might have.

There are not enough tests kits for the U. S. and other countries. Mexico no one knows. This is a tourists country plus all the people trafficad through this country into the states there has to be many more than reported. Don't touch the tope people.  I am now being just a little more cautious than before because I own a nursing home. At this point it could be anywhere. I make weekly trips to Guadalajara I see no panic buying. To sound like a broken record just follow all the advice of professionals. Wash your hands as soon as you get home after touching money.  This will pass and be old news in a couple of months. I hope, I hope...

Please be aware that many expats travel extensively.

They should self-quarantine for a minimum of two weeks when returning to Mexico.

If you know people who have been abroad, please make it crystal clear that they put others at great risk if they do not do this. We all know by now that people can be carrying the virus without being symptomatic.

Let's hope the local expat population will emulate the Mexican talent for coping instead of running around like the panicked chickens north of the border.   For starters this is very good advice.

I am the result of the Spanish flu of 1920. My grandmother lost her husband and left her with 3 kids. My grandfather lost his wife and was left with a daughter. They married and, voila!, here I am. My parents would talk of the extreme poverty that occurred afterwards. They ended up joining the northbound migrations to find work.

Italians are reported to be ordering sex toys in higher than ever #'s since the lockdown began.    Sure beats hoarding toilet paper as a hobby!   ;-)

Any information you want can be found online. Why waste time asking people on a board when you can research it yourself?

Would you be kind enough to tell the source online for the Chapala Governments and state of Jalisco Plans for what those who suspect they may have contacted the virus should do and how to seek help. Thank you.

I found this online.

Mexico is not testing for covid and therefore has a low number of cases.  I even read somewhere that there are only 3 hospitals certified to test.  Below from the Puerto Vallarta News.  There was a similar article in the Mexico News Daily this week also.  We all know how the Mexican bureaucracy can be very frustrating to say the least.  When something changes it can be years before every procedure is decided upon.  Now with the upheaval in IMSS and Seguro Populare, it is a safe bet that the medical system is in shambles. It is likely in no way capable to deal with covid.  Of course, this effects private doctors too.

The Mexican Health Ministry has confirmed that less than 300 people have been tested for the coronavirus since February 8, when the first case was announced. As of today, Mexico has only confirmed 8 cases of the pandemic.

“I’m worried about the lack of diagnostic testing,” said Francisco Moreno, infectious disease specialist and head of Internal Medicine at ABC Hospital in Mexico City. “If Mexico has undetected cases circulating, the spread of the disease is going to be brutal.”

At the same time, Mexico has seen an increase in deaths being contributed to seasonal influenza, which without testing could be misdiagnosed due to the similarities between influenza and the coronavirus.Mexico’s President has continued to reassure people, “We have the best experts on the matter. We still have the same number of cases and luckily there’s been no loss of life. We’re not hiding information from the population.”

Moreno suggested that Mexico is waiting for the pandemic to create problems before addressing the spread.

Currently, Mexico is only allowing testing for people who have known direct contact with the 8 confirmed cases in Mexico or recent travels to high-risk areas.

“It’s likely that they’ve missed some cases and will continue to do so if they don’t increase testing,” says Alejandro Macias, the former national commissioner for influenza in Mexico during the H1N1 outbreak.

The government of Mexico has misled the public about the risks and possible exposure, including denying a passenger on a Princess Cruise that tested positive had visited Mexico, despite passenger logs.

The daily press briefings with Mexico’s President include accusations that conservatives are using the coronavirus to end his presidency.

Mexico has successfully kept the coronavirus numbers low, not through prevention, but through a lack of testing driven by politics and not the health of the public.

This is about more than stocking up on toilet paper. This article is not hype, nor is it "stupid and overblown".  Read it if you are interested in a very clear, intelligent, non-hype statistical evaluation of the pandemic and how various countries have responded successfully and what in all probability will happen in the coming weeks. The title of the article is "Coronavirus: Why you must act now"- by Tomas Pueyo https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

In Lakeside, with a large number of ex-pats traveling frequently out of the country, there is a higher risk than perhaps other parts of Mexico. The recommendation for anyone arriving here from a country which has incidence of this virus is to self-quarantine for 14 days. This can significantly restrict the spread of the virus in this country. The virus can be spread before there are any symptoms.

Ignoring the significance of this is a danger to everyone.

I would fly up to Seattle 3 times per year and I remember that when we had that crisis around 2009 or so that when I went to the Guadalajara Airport, there were people there wearing face masks for protection, and forcing everyone to have their temperature taken. They had some type of thermometer that they placed against your forehead and if your temperature was to high you were sent or taken somewhere. I don't know where, because I was OK and was more worried about catching my flight.

I am over reacting to this outbreak and have purchased a large can of Corona Beer and then when going a small event I will wear my face mask, really a dusk mask, and sit down at the table and tell them I have Corona. And then after watching how they react, I say I have proof and I put the can of Corona Beer on the table.

Some folks got really upset with me, others laughed  I think maybe I should stop, because some were really upset about what I had done.

This virus can make you really, real sick. It makes it hard to breath. It is hard on the old timers. Stay strong, get healthy, boost your immune system with good fruits and vegetables vitamins and supplements. Vitamin C., Nac, fish oil and whatever you think will give you a boost. Rest and exercise, hydration. It is possible that 70% of the population will get the virus. Wash your hands and spray your throat with anti-septic.
