I seem to recall a shop on Madero, or on Lopez Cotilla next to the mercado publico, in Chapala, which carried all sorts of spices. You will need their Spanish names & can find them at rollybrook.com, in a compendium of food names. The search is half the fun!

I think you’ll find that’s fennel...it’s not a bad substitute..I make pickles  ( spears ) every week using pickle spice, dried dill leaves and dill seed and a couple cloves of garlic....not perfect. but  ?  They’re ready in 3 - 4 days ...they stay crisp  about 5 days
