John F250
Hi, I will be driving down in a few weeks to spend the winter lakeside. I've read a lot of conflicting reports on the availability of ULSD or UBA. Does anyone know of it's availability in the Chapala area. Thanks, John
geeser
Yes, there is no shortage as there are many diesel autos and PU down here. I personally drove one for 10 years here. However you must change filters more often here.
John F250
thanks, that is a relief. I will bring some spare filters.
RickS
Having driven a diesel for 10 years does not necessarily address ULSD. I know that earlier this year there were very few Mexican refineries that were able to produce ULSD and most of it was being imported from the US. Another question is "is DEF readily available". Not trying to refute your answer but I'd ask a current new-model diesel truck owner for an opinion if possible.
John F250
If anyone has better information, I would be grateful to hear it. In terms of DEF I will bring down at least 12 gallons, which under severe conditions should be good for over 15,000 miles. John
RVGRINGO
You are not likely to find ULSD or DEF in the interior of Mexico, though I have heard that some stations near the border may have it. The last I knew, from friends, was that they did not choose to drive their new diesels into Mexico for that reason. The USA requires it, as an anti-pollution measure, but it is not yet required in all other countries.
ea93105
More info here : https://www.mexicorvbuddies.com/diesel.php I'm pretty sure I've seen DEF for sale in Autozone here as well.
lcscats
New diesels use cat converters. Not sure local diesel fuel is good for cats. This has nothing to do with DEF but should be considered. Anybody know??? Local diesel smells of Sulfur to me.
lakeside7
Besides fuel quality you may wish to think about the altitude..or not?
John F250
Altitude should not be an issue as it has computer controlled fuel injection. From other boards, I'm finding that ULSD is available but not necessarily at every gas station, so I will start searching at about a 1/2 tank. Apparently BP, Shell and Mobil stations are the best bet over Pemex. John

A diesel engine's efficiency at part load does not significantly change with altitude. And it performs a little better than gas 'under load' because a diesel engine is not "throttled" like a gas engine.
