Zeb
I am planning a trip to the US and plan to do some shopping. Are there any items or quantity of items that may be a problem? I won't be carrying any alcohol or medications. I want to bring some upholstery to recover a couple of arm chairs, clothes.

I should have provided that information in my initial post. I will be driving and entering thorough Pharr.
RickS
The clothes should not be a problem especially if you take the tags off of them and put them in an old suitcase. The upholstery fabric will probably depend on 'how much'.

Yo1
I come thru Pharr every year with my car loaded with purchases and have been stopped once. One box was opened and poked at and I was on my way. I go thru "nothing to declare" because everything is that I buy is for personal use. Fred Habacht
The actual rule is that "personal use" is not exempt if it exceeds $300 usd per person if brought in by car. "Personal use" does still not allow meat products whether cooked, smoked or raw for what ever reason you give. Dog or cat food that is in excess of estimated 30 days usage is not allowed. No dog/cat food can contain meat products.
RickS
.... and then there's what the Agent at the border thinks about one's "stuff". Usually trumps the law.
AlanMexicali
$300.00 USDs exempt on "new" items per person. It does not consider your suitcase full of stuff or your used cell phone or laptop etc. in the $300.00 USD exemption. After $300.00 you might pay duty and IVA depending on the ADUANA setup at that crossing.

Mostlylost
I always use my poorest Spanish Something like Tengo casa renta Chapala regreso en seis mes con todo. Todo usado. Works every time with an SUV stuffed to the brim at Laredo no. 2 bridge. I usually cross about 7AM
