freewilly
First time in Chapala in a month or so. I will swap out my SIM card when I cross from Texas.....is there a particular carrier I should look for?
johanson
I believe that Telcel is, by far, the largest, cellphone company in Mexico. It seems to have the best coverage as well.
RickS
Some NOB carriers have partnered with Telcel so that changing your SIM card is not necessary.... it just starts using Telcel as one crosses the border. T-Mobile is one for sure... I have them. And probably at least AT&T since they have a presence in Mexico themselves. Then once in Chapala, if planning on staying/living here you could at your leisure switch to someone. If it were me it would be Telcel as their coverage is much better than AT&T... in my experience. The case with my Canadian sim card is if I use it in Mexico I am charged $12 for each time I use my phone in Mexico. An expensive partnership. Go Solar
Spend that 12 bucks with Telcel Amigo and you'll get a generous plan of voice, text, and data for a month. 50 or 80 pesos I believe to buy the SIM card. AND, the same plan works in the US & C w/o roaming charges.....wow.
freewilly
A telcel card with delivery to Canada is $50CAN or 38US for 30 days, unlimited voice and 3 gb data. Better deals at a MX store? I imagine the border at Laredo has foks selling Sims
Mostlylost
You could buy a telcel amigo card online and then add the amount you want on the telcel.com page Here is one for $7.00 US https://www.ebay.com/itm/Telcel-Mexico-Prepaid-SIM-Card-FREE-SHIPPING-TO-ALL-WORLD/163865762427?hash=item2627291a7b:g:faIAAOSwc15bTRN~
freewilly
Thanks I ordered that one from EBAY. Looked at Telcel.com and will need some time to digest buying a plan....
mudgirl
A "plan" with Telcel means signing a contract and paying them every month (or you can prepay). A "paquete" is what you buy at any OXO convenience store and many other stores. It's pay as you go- when your time runs out, you just buy more. Personally, I'm not into signing any contracts with Telcel.
Mostlylost
Luv my Telcel plan. I signed up when the package that I have was still available, and they honor it even though the $199 plan includes less now. . I pay $199 per month. Have unlimited calls & texts Mexico, Canada, USA to and in all those countries. Unlimited social media & WhatsApp plus 1gb of internet. When I purchased my last phone I was given a $2000 peso credit on the price, and a free basic cell phone with chip and $50 credit which I sold for $200. Hard to beat. freewilly
Anybody doing the buy a SIM via the Ebay link provided....worked very well. Sim was already activated with a phone number and all I had to do was go onto mobilerecharge.com and purchase the coverage I selected. A breeze.
