RFC is a tax I.D. number for Mexico. The letters stand for Registro Federal de Contribuyentes. The Mexican Tax Administration Service assigns a unique number for each person.

Beware of made up RFC

Shortly after we moved to Mexico Bancomer asked all their customers to have an RFC and they quicly came up with RFC for everyone and that was it.. Recently I found out that both our RFC was being rejected as no valid by many businesses.. We need facturas con our RFC to get reimbursed for medical expenses.. so the business would put generic RFC in order to produce a factura.. While I was in Chiapas I went to SAT ( the Mexican IRS) and asked them why our RFC was being rejected.. They quickly ssued to new numbers.. so no big deal.. but now that the system is computerized you may find out that the RFC that was issued byt the banks were just made up and do not work in the system..
