Texas border crossing question

We are currently in Ajijic, driving a US plated car with TIP that expires in December.  We plan to go north across the border for several weeks, returning until December when we will return north again (before the 180 days passes).  When we reach the border going north, do we need to turn in any paperwork?  Our plan is to start on the temporal/permanente process now in September.  We asked on our southbound entry into Mexico and were told that we could just leave without turning anything in and then reenter, stopping to get the new "visa" marked canje when we return to Mexico.  But I'm not sure if that is proper and hope someone can verify for us.   Gracias.

That is not proper.  Also; if you should lose your car for any reason, you would be unable to get another Importada Temporal.

More importantly: When you get approved for a residence visa, your vehicle will only be eligible for a 30 day Importada Temporal, and must be updated with Aduana upon issuance of the actual visa in Mexico. You will then have a "TIP" which matches your new INM status. Going forward, you must continue to update your vehicle permit with Aduana at every renewal of your visa. As you approach the four year limit, it will be time to remove the vehicle from Mexico before you transition to Residente Permanente.

Had you not said that you were going to start your Temporal process in September I would have said don't stop. RV's comment about 'losing the car while north' is the caveat to that position but....

It is just too easy to do it the right way.... turn it in when you leave and get a new one. Once you start the Temporal.... in the US.... you should follow the criteria for TIPs associated with that process, i.e. a 30-day TIP along with your paperwork that must be followed up in Chapala.   Do it right, don't do it the way that might be more convenient.
