bmh
In Chiapas a ladino is a mestizo period and not a nice word to mestizos according to the ingeneer I was with when he told me to never use the word. I believe that ladino is also used with the same meaning in Guatemala. To the indigenous woman I was with a ladino is a mestizo. She lived in a town that had indigenous and mestizos living there and the town was destroyed when the dam in central Chiapas was build , she told me that the indigenous moved to a place they call Paraiso and the "ladinos "moved to a place called Latija Tendida she used the word ladino instead of meztizo , nothing to do with English.. Actually in their language they call the non indigenous kaxlan but she used the Spanish word for mestizos who lived in indigenous area.. You can see how with time it became pejorative..
