challenges of long term expat life

Recommended Posts

The British have over a centuries experience living the "expat" life. It is a part of their culture. Most of the jobs, working for European companies operating internationally are well paid, and they pay no British income tax if they stay out for one year. Many famous Brits grew up in these households. The expats tend to stick close together, with their own codes of conduct, much to the amusement and cynicism of writers like Somerset Maugm or John Cheever. This was not as common in the U.S.A. except for military,  oil industry workers and many entertainers. Many returned to the U.S. and had trouble fitting in. Some turned to renegade "outsider" groups, like the formation of outlaw motorcycle clubs like the Hell's Angels, or starting an art school in San Miguel Allende with money from the G.I. bill.
