Go during the week and just find a suitable hotel, plenty of vacancies.  There are two ways to get there, take the one via Atemajac on the way out and the one via the cuota on the way back.  Both are enjoyable.

I never spend the night in places that I can easily visit as a day trip. One night in Tapalpa should be enough for even the slowest visitor.

Agree it is a good over night trip.  If you leave here first thing you can enjoy a late breakfast/brunch on the square and spend the day in the town looking around.  Have a nice evening meal and plan a wandering drive home.
