Dicofloneco for pain

Recommended Posts

In another thread, someone mentioned the 30 year old topical pain remedy, "dicofloneco".  This is also Voltaren.  Before feeling comfortable using it, please check this info. provided by Dr. Google:

Diclofenac can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Diclofenac may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while you are using this medicine, especially in older adults."

...other than that.........🙄

I have had heart attacks and kidney failure and therefore banned from NSAID use, like diclofenac, for life. That is if internally taken. In its topical form, like Voltaren, my doctors all agree that it is safe to use. I use it when my arthritic hands start to ache and it works.

Yes, internal vs topical are very different. No NSAIDS for me, but Volteran in small doses and short periods is OK.

Yes, it seems Diclofenac can be really hard on the kidneys.  I have used small doses to control arthritis pain in my knees for  several years and have developed issues with my kidneys.  A kidney specialist I visited today told me that this medication could well be the source of my problem and warned me off it along with the rest of the NSAIDs.   Fortunately there are other options.

Diclofenaco is to be taken with food and if taking it for any length of time do regular blood work to check liver and kidney function. This from a friend and excellent Canadian doctor.

Voltaren is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is applied topically.  In order to work it has to be absorbed into the body at the location it is applied.  Some of the drug will of course get into the blood stream.  How much and is it dangerous? Certainly less than an oral drug but if you have heart problems, etc. I suggest you do not use it with any frequency.
