Transportation around Ajijic

Recommended Posts

We decided to just spend most of our time in Ajijic, rather than GDL. We will be staying in a house near Tobolandia, with no car. Since we will have 2 kids with us (6 & 9) I am trying to figure out best way to get from our house to malecon, plaza, different restaurants, etc. We will try to walk as first form of transportation, but might want to take taxi/bus to or from our destination. Question is, are taxis easy to find down on that side of town? Looks like there might be taquerias and fondas within short walk. Mariscos el Carnal Suc looks good.

We plan on just catching the bus to go back and forth to Chapala. Is that as easy as flagging down a bus on Hwy 23?

For walkability, you might find it easier to just hop on a bus, eastbound, and go the five miles to Chapala, getting off at the plaza downtown. You will find walking to everything will be much easier, and taxis easier to find. The malecon is bigger and much more interesting, especially for kids, and there are many options for food in restaurants, on the street, and even choices for ice cream cones and frozen fruit 'paletas'. There will even be other kids, which is a rare sight in Ajijic, as well as more places with benches for relaxing breaks from walking.

Thanks RV for pointing out that bit about kids available  in Chapala and  not  Ajijic..I had not  thought about it before

By Hwy 23 I assume you mean the Carretera - main drag through Lakeside? Call it that or no one will know what you mean. Buses are fairly frequent - every 15 minutes or less but don't run very late in the evening. Most stay on the Carretera but a few go into Ajijic and San Antonio. Ask the driver before you get on the bus.

Taxi's can be found at taxi stands in both Ajijic and Chapala plaza's.  You can also find them at Walmart and Soriana.  The small older autobus's go into San Antonio and Ajijic.  The newer bigger bus will stay on carretera from Chapala to Jocotepec.  Also some of the newest are Guadalajara direct and from Jocotopec  turn at the mall not going into chapala. There are some bus stands so use them or else stand at the corner of a street when flagging the bus.

Mariscos El Carnal almost never has customers.  Hard to imagine their seafood is fresh since they must have very little turnover.  There are quite a few better restaurants for seafood.

"Suc" is an abbreviation for "sucursal", which means "branch".  Mariscos El Carnal is a chain and is awful, don't bother.

bdlington you have been here a long time and are fluent and uou cannot tell me you haven't figured out that restaurants reason for being in business after 3 years and no business patrons.

Anyway, Ashley B, you will have a lot of fun here with the kids.  Take the bus into Chapala and at the eastern end of the Malecon are some great restaurants for seafood.  The patio on the eastern end by the government buildings and brightly painted CHAPALA tourist sign for photos makes guacamole tableside which is always fun.

Go to Ajijic Newbies facebook page and join and there you will find a file of names and phone numbers for drivers.  Drivers are a better bet than cabs, put a couple names and numbers on a list the prices are resonable enough with two tired kids at the end of a long day.  You won't see cabs trolling for fares.

Using a driver, on call, is an excellent idea with kids.  You can walk all over Chapala, until you are ready to drop, then call and have him pick you up wherever you wish.  Maybe, at the "Fisherman Fountain", while you soak your feet in the water!

Ashley, your kids (and whole family) should check out Cristiana Park, just south of the malecon, 1 block further from the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) station.    Play areas, volleyball courts, tennis courts, soccer field, disc (frisbee) golf course, shaded picnic areas, washrooms, and a nice walk along the water there too with a lot of shade.

The restaurant Mariscos Guichos on the Chapala water front is a very good place to eat, especially the Molcajete with shrimp, octopus and chicken, or either. Located on the malecon at Ramón Corona 20, Centro, 45900 Chapala, Jal.

Just to clarify 'tho, it is NORTH of the Malecon. South would put one out in the lake.   😎
