Alpha1
I was wondering if anyone here is using Alexa Echo Spot? If you do, would you mind contacting me to share some information as to how it works for communication ? Thank you.
ComputerGuy
I have Echos but no Spot. There is a ton of info on the Web. Here is an app for your Android smartphone (most people control their Echoes with their smartphones) that is actually a user guide. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deptiranidey.echospotuserguide&hl=en_US Tom's Guide has info on both the setup and the customization of "drop ins", with screen shots: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/hot-to-set-up-echo-spot,review-5478.html But the best resource is the Alexa Webpage itself. https://alexa.amazon.com

My father has a cell phone #, but no Wifi. I have an android smartphone . Would like to check in on him in Canada with the "drop in feature". ComputerGuy
No, all Echo devices need WiFi. 1
Syver117
I have echo dots and use to whole house music. It streams from WiFi. You can also ask all sorts of questions and get answers off the internet.

They are marketing this item to elderly seniors, with landlines only. Something doesn't add up?
ComputerGuy
They would still require Internet and WiFi. The only time it works without Internet is apparently alarm settings, because it retains the memory of the alarm. First it tries to get the alarm sound or music from the Internet; if that fails, it plays the default sound at the correct time. Everything else, no. Lily H
For an Echo Dot or Spot to work, it has to be plugged in and connected to WiFi. You do also need a computer or smartphone to do the setup.
Gloria & Troy
Alpha1, We are new here. Please ignore this if you have found your answers. Our good friend, communicates with her dad with the "drop in" feature. Both ends need wifi. She first enable the "drop in" command. Then just say "drop in on Dad" and it turns on a video call (if you have an Alexa with video). Dad doesn't have to answer. My friend has an Alexa app on her phone so she can use that to "drop in" on her Alexa even if she's not at home with her Alexa.
AngusMactavish
Thanks! I have an Alexa and installed the AP on my phone. I plan on spooking the dookey out of my house sitter when I am in Asia.
Gloria & Troy
Hahaha! Our friend can see her dad when they are talking if she chooses because her dad has an Alexa with a screen.
