ComputerGuy
More LIana just gave me an excellent background history of this delicious soup, a regional favourite in Michoacán. It's similar to to sopa Azteca, but often made with beans. The only time I've had it was in Patzcuáro. Was wondering if anyone had seen it on a menu around here. Nothing that I've seen lakeside, but maybe Jocotepec or somewhere? Not Guad; not really interested in driving there just for soup. https://mexicocooks.typepad.com/mexico_cooks/2018/09/a-classic-on-the-table-in-michoacán-sopa-tarasca.html
Yo1
It seems to be a Michoacan regional dish. Similar to tortas ahogadas is regional to Jalisco .

The wife is very familiar will that soup but has never heard it being served in GDL.

Tiny
First thing she said was, "You mean pinto bean soup?". She said it is variation/similar to tortilla soup.
