Earl
I have a 2009 Toyota with 57000 km on it, and the check engine light has come on for the third time. Both previous times I took it to local (here and in Manzanillo) non-Toyota mechanics who put it on their little hand-held diagnostic machines, said everything checked out fine, and that they think it was just the sensor. I want to sell the car so want to make sure that all is okay with it. Do I need to take it to a Toyota dealer in Guad so that they can check it out officially and perhaps set that engine light so that it does not come on again until the next maintenance is due? Is there more than one Toyota dealer? If so, which do you recommend? Anyone have experience with Dalton's service dept? Any help is appreciated. Thank you! bontepar
The dealer will do exactly the same as the local mechanic, put a scanner on,only it will cost you 10 times more
ragtopman
Do you know what code its throwing? If not take it to AutoZone, they should be able to scan it for you and tell you the code and it could even be an easy fix by yourself.
Paco Loco
Take it to Juan Carlos at Escalera He’s got diagnostics to read the codes and trouble shoot the problem.
Al Berca
I think being able to show a prospective buyer that you recently had your car serviced, examined, repaired, etc. by Dalton Toyota, or other Toyota dealer, rather than a local mechanic may bring you a better selling price and quicker sale. lloyd520
I have 2 Toyotas (a 2011 and a 2015) Whenever an oi change is done it is necessary to reset the check engine light to off. It involves the trip meter button and turning on and off. Check Bing or google search. That is how I found it.
HoneyBee
I had a toyota tercel for many years and the check engine light was for ever coming on and no mechanic could figure why and this was back in Canada. I finally had it switched off.....

michael2595
happened to me in the past and I did change the old gas cap and the check engine light went away. https://blog.esurance.com/top-4-reasons-not-to-panic-when-your-check-engine-light-comes-on-2/
ComputerGuy
Unless the cap is damaged, or the threads on the tank neck access, then it is more likely an unevenly-secured gas cap, allowing air into the tank, which triggers the "check engine" light. l see it happen most often after getting gas at a station. RickS
When my wife gets gas in her Lexus, she never tightens the cap fully.... she thinks she is but not. That sooner or later will set the check engine light and throws a code. I go out and tighten it, reset the engine lite and all is well.... until I let her fill it again. 😟
HoneyBee
You have a very smart wife ! (you pay for the gas and she drives the car..)
Earl
I went to Escalera today. Carlos was wonderful. The light came on because of a fuse. Simple fix. He also told me not to let anyone steam clean the engine because it could damage the sensor. Thank you all for the help, and I'll note gas cap issues. Good info!
