Earl
I am driving tomorrow to Manzanillo headed for Las Brisas beach. Are there toll roads? What's the best route? Anything to beware of? Any and all pointers, directions, tips will be greatly appreciated.
Mainecoons
It's all toll road and it isn't cheap. Depending on where you live most take the route around Jocotepec and then north over the mountain pass to the main road into GDL. Go over the bridge and that ramp points you south on the toll road. Drive and pay for about 3.5 hours.
Fred Habacht
The toll road is to the left and is marked COLIMA. The first three tolls will take you past the old lake bed....as a point of interest look for the elephants and rhinoceros life sized figures on the rt. and left of the road. The lake bed should have some water in it now but will be fully dry within a few weeks and then the area is known for frequent dust devils that fly at a rapid speed. barrbower
If you are not trying to get there as fast as possible, there are free roads all the way to Manzanillo. It will take quite a bit longer time but some nice scenery and interesting towns both on the highways and just off the highway maybe an hour detour or less. Tapalpa, Sayula, Colima, Comala, and Cuyutlan are all worth seeing. Maybe catch one place going down and one coming back. The toll roads are way faster, safer, and easier. You could actually take toll roads part of the way and free roads part of the way. The two options run parallel for much of the trip. The "dry" lake does have some shallow water right now and quite a few wading birds. Alan
Mainecoons
There's also the free road Ruta 80 that goes to Melaque. About a 5 hour trip depending on stops. Scenic and interesting, parts are pretty good, parts are rough. It's a favorite of the local moto crowd. You go the same way as going to the toll road but immediately exit it after getting on. All of these routes are very easily seen on Google maps.
