To my knowledge it is not possible to leave the country/cross the border while leaving ‘part of your TIP vehicle’ back in Mexico. Or at least in 15 years I have not heard of that ‘program’.  My info says if you show up at the border with a valid TIP (which you seem to say you don’t have either) with a vehicle attached to it on paperwork but not physically, officials will not allow one to ‘cancel’ that TIP.

If you do in fact have an expired TIP then it and the trailer are in Mexico illegally. One can, to drive the vehicle to the border, get a Retorno Seguro document from SAT that gives the driver 5-6 business days after receipt to get it out of the country. In your case ‘tho I don’t know if this can be done without the trailer attached.

If’n I were you I would get in touch with Chapala lawyer Spencer McMullen as he has experience in ‘matters of the TIP and Retorno Seguro paperwork’.
