Want some input from someone who really knows.

After the absolute horrific disaster my wife just went through with an Ajijic "dentist," I am understandably "concerned" about making a choice for my major dental procedure.

Just like a car, I started out with great teeth. perfect occlusion. Never braces, etc. Now, after decades it's coming to the point of seriously diminishing returns. I have a couple of bridges and some crowns, and some "slightly" loose teeth.

I'm giving an educated guess that within the next 12-18 months, I'l looking at a full set of dentures. I'm vacillating  between between fixed dentures (with implants) to just "regular" dentures where I would use dental glue (Fixident, etc.). BTW, as a matter of pure trivia, overuse (massive) of dental adheasive can give you some very bad side effects.

I have good bone after 2-years of Fosamax, but after what happened to my wife,  implants scare the heck out of me.

So my question:

Based on your experience or that of someone you know personally (forget hearsay  - - he said, he said, she said, etc.); What would you do/recommend and why?

Thanks.

If the main portion of your teeth are savable, you may want to consider veneers. Dr. Candy next to HSBC in San Antonio did six front veneers for me and they are perfect. My original teeth were cracked and broken and an uneven from wear and tear  but there was enough of each tooth good in order to have the Veneers adhered to them. I have had my veneers going on for years.

Dr. Barragan in Mirasol is the other recognized best dentist (along with Dr. Haro).  I used him for an implant. Everything went perfectly, I always felt I was in the hands of a very competent professional.  6 years on, no problems.  Fees were higher than other doctors.

The problems are way more than would be helped by veneers.

Going back to my original post:

Anyone with experience with full dentures w/0 implants?

I suggest that you make an appointment with Dr. Barragan for an evaluation and a quote. He will listen to your wishes and will not "upsell" what is not necessary, or what is not desired. He is excellent. I do not think there is any better dentist at Lake Chapala.

If you have an extra $35K USD cash laying around, I would go to Dr. Golpa in Las Vegas.

I have researched him for the past 3 years and cannot find one complaint... unusual for a US based concern.

They have a new office in Dallas, which is where I plan to go.

Second the vote for Dr. Barragan. He's been our family dentist for ten years.  Very honest.  Can't advise re implants and such since we both still have our own choppers, but he'll point you in the right direction.

Maybe no one is up for making a recommendation to a stranger on something as important as removing all your teeth and putting something else in your mouth and explaining to you why.

Listen, Eric, and trust me on this: if anyone here had an exact answer for you, they would have answered. Not only that, but none of us here appear to be dentists. The way your statement is worded, I can only guess you are asking whether you should get fixed dentures or a set of chompers. Plus (and I see Xena just answered)... that's a pretty tough recommendation to make to anybody.

Eric, if first world countries dentures are loosing out as a solution in favor of implants. You will have to look hard to find a really good dentist doing dentures in 5 years. Properly fitted and made dentures do not require "glue". They are held in by the close fit and suction it creates. If you are on drugs like dilantin they cause you gums to change shape and you well never be properly fitted. Implants are the superior solution. Few dentures are made today fitted properly to avoid using "glue".

You're right. Still, NOB dental services are priced so high, often the average person can't come near to affording them so the come S.O.B. to Mx. and in most cases, get quality work, but not always S.O.T.A.

In my wife's case, the general dentist falsely claimed to be a specialist, and removed all my wife's teeth (remaining 19) which were well set into solid bone. Come to find out, the dentist is NOT certified and/or registered as a specialist.

She ended up w/mini-implants but there is still an adjustment issue.

The original dentist is going to be called to task for her, at best, incompetence, or at worst, her fraud. You pick.

Why not make consultation appointments with Dr. Haro and Dr. Barragan and see what each of these highly recommended dentists has to say?

Just a note for people who do not know that neither  Dr. Haro or Dr. Barragan do implants themselves. They have someone from Guadalajara (I believe) to come to Ajijic to do implants for them ....so probably good to check on these individuals (do not know if it's a same person every time)  Dr.Barragan  did not even do a root canal in our case. He had someone else to perform that task but that could have been because he was busy. All went well but it was little bit of surprise.

Can someone please respond to the question in my original post?

See a respected and well recommended dentist like Dr. Haro or Dr. Barragan. It is quite simple. Don't look at price if you want a proper job. The above two may not do the actual work but they will have another dentist do it who will certainly be good.

Islander,

It is common practice, in Mexico, for root canals and implants to be done by specialists who are called in, and who have the specialized tools and expertise for those procedures. It has been that way for root canals for as long as I can remember; and is now the same for implants. Since the attending dentist's reputation depends upon good results, I suggest that the patient must rely upon his judgement and advice.
