Chapala Web Board URL Not Secure

For about two weeks, when I have come into this web board, I've been noticing that the URL is shown as NOT SECURE.  Anybody have any ideas about what's going on?  ComputerGuy?

I asked the same question of Moderator 2 on August 8 in a PM; was told to contact the webboard administrator at Chapala@chapala.com for information. I did, and to date no response. Given everything going on these days, it's a true security lapse.

Thanks for responding, jrod.  It certainly is.  I just contacted them myself, mentioning concern for the Chapala.com community and asking for a solution to the problem.

I sent an email to Chapala about this.  I'll let you know what he says.

This explains what it means:

https://www.ltnow.com/google-chrome-security-warning/

https://strategynewmedia.com/why-website-not-secure-google-chrome/

Apparently it is not that uncommon and is of particular importance if you were to send or post sensitive personal or banking/credit information.

Just checked with chrome and found similar info.

https://www.google.com.mx/search?q=this+page+is+not+secure+chrome&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjUoe2LhIHdAhUFnawKHWFWDvoQ1QIIeSgA&biw=1253&bih=593

The articles say it is super-easy for a website to get free SSLs to secure its transmissions

Never did hear back from Chapala on my email on this, though.

This web is a http (unsecure) site, not a https (secure) site. What happened was Chrome and other  browsers changed to point out if a site is not secure. This site was never secure except for a password, no encryption.

Yes, all those links help to describe the situation. Fortunately, what we do on this site doesn't require much "security", because who cares if anybody sees what drivel I type here, truly. However, it would be more important to the holders of the actual database information... and why not? It's easy to convert.

It's always showed up as secure (using the https:// designation) until the last few weeks.   Something changed, and like jrod, I messaged them but have received no response.  We do have some spammers who show up here from time to time, the SECURE designation is apparently easy to get and KEEP, and it troubles me that Chapala doesn't appear to give enough of a damn to make the site secure again.

Why add another server when you don't need it? Why encrypt a chat room, movie, etc?

If you have to, you can do the same with a VPN with encryption turn on.

When I entered this site just now, the URL once again shows up as https://.  Either Chapala fixed it or it's magic.  Jrod, ComputerGuy, et al, let me know please what your URL shows.

Clicking the circle to the left of the "www" tells me this site is not secure.  I'm using a Chromebook.  I guess they're rolling out security one user at a time so good for you jrod.  But as Mainecoons pointed out, I'm really not being cheated based on what I have paid to use the site. LOL.

Mine is also now secure. Don't care so much about securing the content but contact information may have been vulnerable. Yes or No?

It may or not secure. HTTPS only secures the data that is transmitted, not the data (contact information) that is on the server's databases. Most of the time hackers will target the databases, not the transmissions.

Mine also says "Not secure".  I am running Chrome Version 68.0.3440.106 (Official Build) on a Windows 10 PC with no worries.

I'm getting secure on Chrome.  Delete previous bookmarks and cookies.

I did all that and restarted my PC.

What are you entering into your browser? If I enter the following:

www.chapala.com/wwwboard/webboard.html

It changes to:

http://www.chapala.com/wwwboard/webboard.html

Not secure.  If I enter the following:

https://www.chapala.com/wwwboard/webboard.html

I get a secure page but it is incomplete, only showing the side panel.

Totalplay is my internet provider.

Adding an s to http doesn't work unless the site is already st up for it. Right now I can tell you that Firefox won't open chapala.com, but Chrome has no problem. So it could be any of a thousand things. I also use https anywhere, but it doesn't work if the site is not set up properly. I leave it on all the time because even though I don't care about some sites, it saves me having to do it manually.

Firefox handles security in different ways than Chrome. You'll see this sometimes when visiting banking sites, and for some reason you can't get in without using a different browser. So in the meantime, the problem lies with chapala.com, not being able to negotiate properly with Firefox... in some cases.

I have exclusively used Chrome for many years.  For a few weeks starting in early August Chapala.com showed with no "Secure" prior to the URL.  Beginning last Thursday morning, I once again see a lock, the word SECURE, and the full URL starting with  green https:// followed by the web address for the web boards here.  Make of it what you will.
