bdmowers
Best to drape it over a wall, soak it, brush it with soapy water, rinse it and let dry.
bournemouth
If you don't want to try it yourself, Barbara's Bazaar does a good job on orientals, but best to wait until the rainy season is over as drying will be much easier then.

RVGRINGO
In the Middle East, such carpets are placed on a slightly sloping concrete surface, where they are soaked, soaped and scrubbed with brushes and brooms, using copious amounts of water to rinse them. They are then "squeegeed" with a garden hoe to remove as much water as possible, and to help get the texture restored. As the rugs are of wool, I was always amazed that they came out the same size and that the colors were as good as new. I think the secret is in the flat, smooth concrete pad. There is no stretching, as would happen if hung on a line, or even an imperfect wall, and the drying is allowed to happen on that flat surface.
