Abbeyfield

Actually, I wasn't looking for any answer from you. You made that clear the first time you posted. What he wants and what he gets may be 2 different things. Which is why I directed my inquiry to cedros. But thanks anyway.

Sad.  It's a very interesting story, the concept and history is here: http://abbeyfield-ajijic.org/abby-field-concept/

Abbeyfield Homes was established in England in the mid 1950s to provide affordable accommodation for active pensioners who no longer want to live alone. Abbeyfield societies are now located in more than 16 countries around the world. Casas Cariñosas A.C. was established in Ajijic, Mexico, in 2006 and operates as the first Abbeyfield Home in Latin America.

Casas Cariñosas A.C, is a not-for-profit legal Mexican organization which owns the Abbeyfield-Ajijic home. Each resident pays a monthly fee covering the costs of their room, utilities and food, as well as the salaries for the House Manager, maids and gardener.

Abbeyfield offers a warm, family-style environment with a balance between privacy and companionship and security and independence, combined with the sensitivity and understanding of the resident House Manager and a team of dedicated volunteers.

The Home includes two small style hotel rooms, 2 medium size rooms with walk in closet, and five modern 1 bed-room casitas (small houses).  The nine residents share a large well-equipped kitchen and dining room, a comfortable salon with TV, satellite and DVD, a lap pool in the front garden, and a hacienda-style L-shaped terrace with beautiful views across Lake Chapala to the Sierra Madre mountains.

Because of its location in the heart of the village, residents can easily walk to shops, restaurants and local clubs and organizations.

Information i received one year ago, Abby was making a profit a over $20,000 a year, there was talk of sharing with non profits locally.

Abby fields is A.C. Mexican non profit.   properly was donated by owner over 10 years ago, to create a a non profit  independent home.

i remember being invited in 2009 to easter dinner for a fee, was great, helped raise funds for the expenses of the center

I WAS TOLD AT  THE DINNER ABBY FIELDS WAS A LEGAL MEXICAN NON PROFITS, FILING THE PROPER REPORTS EVERY YEAR

at the time the president name was Powell. i heard a year ago by third party the management was being turned over to  group of local Mexican business man.

and that they would share any profit with  local nonprofits.

Has any more information about this properly which i hope was owned by thE NON PROFIT hopefully titled to the NON PROFIT if things were done right.

how can a property worth over 1/2 million dollars  BECOME A CONDO. IF ITS OWNED BY A NON PROFIT

WHO GETTING THE MONEY, IS IT GOING LOCAL CHARITIES.

DOES ANYONE KNOW.

He would prefer to set aside the speculation and provide you all with the facts...sorry if this is not the answer to want you want to hear

If he wanted to present us all with the facts then he should do just that. Release a statement on letterhead with his signature that gives the facts for all to see. A group of phone calls from geezers with hearing and memory issues who then will reinterpret what he said will just add many new versions to the speculation instead of setting it aside.

Well if it's a non-profit they may be able to take that money and buy a bigger place for even more people. They probably won't have that view but if they could say, double, the number of residents that would be a good thing, IMHO.

So, sounds like the residents were informed they were being displaced at the end of May/beginning of June.  Wonder why we are only just hearing about it now.

Would really like to know the names of the other Mexican businessmen that are  involved, along with Notario Luis Enrique Ramos.

As a member of the Committee that has been responsible for the overall operation and oversight of Abbeyfield since its beginning, I would like to tell you why we voted to close Abbeyfield.

Abbeyfield, a place where long time Lakeside residents could come to live in a communal setting with provided meals after they reached the age where they no longer wanted to live alone,  was the dream of Lissa Taylor, a Canadian lady who moved to Lakeside many years ago.  Lissa loved the local community.  She loved the Mexican community as well as the longtime expat community.  She felt Mexico had given much to her and she wanted to give back to this country.  As part of her desire to help the Mexican community, Lissa, a longtime member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, started their Outreach program to raise money for local charities.  Lissa was the major benefactor of Abbeyfield and was its first resident in 2007.  She lived there until her death several years later.

In the beginning, those who helped Lissa find and operate a place that achieved her dream, were all from St. Andrews.  This “Committee”  had fund raisers,  cooked Sunday meals when the facility manager was off, organized activities and were the oversight of the operation of the facility.  As time passed, the number of people on this Committee dwindled as people died, left the area or moved on to other things.  Those of us remaining were also aging and tired and we wanted to find an organization that would take responsibility for the oversight of Abbeyfield and be good stewards of its assets.  As Abbeyfield was organized as an A.C. (charity), it could only be given to or taken over by another charitable organization.  We approached several local charities and several local churches but they were not interested or did not feel they had the personnel to take on that responsibility.

In the beginning, the residents of Abbeyfield were all long time residents of Lakeside.  However, over the years this changed and was no longer the case.  A great number of our residents  have been people who have recently came to Lakeside looking for a cheaper place to live or people whose children have brought them down because it was a cheaper alternative than that provided in the North.  This was not Lissa’s dream.

The scope of Abbeyfield is limited to independent living.  This is a small niche in the senior care market and is not the future of that market.  Most of our residents only stay a year or so.  Either they must move to a facility providing more care or decide they want to live with someone else or totally on their own in another place.   A facility that affords more care is what is required Lakeside and although the Committee discussed that possibility several years ago, we did not have the personnel to take on that responsibility.  As more facilities open Lakeside to provide graduated care,  people have many more options to find the care level they need.

The Abbeyfield property is a valuable asset, one which could provide the funds to do much good for the local community.  With the rents we have been charging, our return on that asset have been very low.  This affords us little revenue to help the most vulnerable in the community.

Thanks for an excellent explanation.  It makes perfect sense and a big thanks to you and everyone who made it possible.

That paragraph is very descriptive of what has been going on at lakeside for quite some time.

10th April....Well I guess that plan did not work out......"There is now a sign on the former Abbeyfield offering apartments for rent (5 or 6, I think) and also the main house."
