Several years ago a friend went to a doctor here. After a couple of visits the kind doctor took him to Guadalajara to see a cardiologist who was on his team of specialists. My friend was given an EKG after which his doctor and the cardiologist told him he was in danger of dying and needed a procedure immmediately. Luckily, there was a room available right then. My friend was terrified and felt so lucky that his trusted doctor was with him. Months later when he still had all the same symptoms and his doctor said he needed more (expensive) tests he took the EKG to a well-known cardiologist. He said he was there for a second opinion and asked what action the doctor would recommend from this test result. The doctor studied it and said he would recommend nothing, the reading indicated a normal heart for a man his age. So, yes, second and even third or fourth opinions are essential. That is difficult to do when your trusted doctor tells you you could die if you leave the hospital as happened to my friend.

That doctor has a habit of doing that. Ironically when he goes outside at his clinic he takes a smoke break. I wonder what HIS doctor would say about that.

My recommendation is Dr. Juan Pablo Loza, located in Chapala at Calle Guerrero 141-A at the corner of Lopez Cotilla.  Telephone (376) 765-5477.

email:  dr.jploza@hotmail.com.    He's a very good diagnostician and speaks English.

I would echo this with one caveat:  he loves those tests, so be a bit discerning with that.

So far, so good as far as any tests that Dr. J.P. has ordered over the years that my husband and I have been going to him.   The last one,  a CT scan for my husband revealed a serious situation that was promptly taken care of by a Guadalajara neurosurgeon!

Many of the doctors here are scam artists. They are not interested in your health but in making a buck. It is scandalous really. If it is serious get a second or third opinion.

I would like to respectfully disagree that many of the doctors are scam artists. Personally I have found that some are simply incompetent. Not necessarily on purpose but they just have not had the training or experience. They are anxious to begin to practice and sometimes do not know what they do not know. Absolutely agree about second opinions. I am going to have one myself.

Now a LITTLE PLUG .....IT IS NURSES WEEK                                                       SAVED MANY A DOCTORS hide

I haven`t experienced a single doctor here in Mexico like this.  Quite the opposite.

Bdmowers, you're one of the lucky ones.  The ones that have experienced the doctor telling them they may die or be in a wheelchair (like I was told) if they don't immediately do bla bla ... have experienced the scam artists.  The doctor that I believe is being discussed even put his recommendation and prediction of me being a paraplegic soon in writing.  He printed it off along with information about what happens when your spinal cord is being pinched as he said mine was.  I suppose this was all to convince us to leave immediately for the hospital.  I wasn't even to stop at the house.  I kept all those papers to remind me that indeed there are scam artists in our midst and most definitely second and third opinions are warranted.

I have had nothing but GREAT care from the Ajijic Clinic for 7 years now.  However when I understood when I needed another hip replacement I went to the doctor a local Canadian fitness guy suggested....he save me the time of checking around. BTW,  I LOVED IT when I told a woman on the Plaza I went to Guad to get my hip done by a "Sports Medicine Doctor" and she said, "God No, I am not into sports, I just want my hip done!" BTW I hiked  the Camino de Santiago a few months after I had my hip done in Guad!

Back to the Ajijic Clinic, they are open 24 hours, they are NOT perfect but none of the doctors in the states have been. They spend lots of time with you and listen to you. I lost my fear of doctors with them. If you know what your problem is, and they feel the same way after an exam and conversation, you come out feeling great. Oh, had MANY things taken care of there.  Nice guys, Father, son and all the other good looking doctors.  If it is important, they will send you to Guad.

We agree with Ajijic Hospital.  Dr. Rodriguez doesn't try to treat everything ... like many others here.  When you have a specialized problem he tells you to see a specialist and if you don't know one he can make recommendations.

Also, I used the sports medicine clinic in Guadalajara also for neck surgery and would certainly use them again.

A local Cardiologist told my spouse that a heart operation would solve his problems.

As we had no Insurance , we paid over $10,000.US. in cash. The so-called heart procedure didn't help one iota,

and the doctor  didn't want to discuss it, brushed us off. Just had to "suck it up".

No such thing as a guarantee i.e....."money back if you're not satisfied"   Should have got a 2nd and 3rd opinion.

Good luck.

Wow, Xena--My husband and I had almost exactly the same experience. In our case, my husband's local family doctor, or GP, recommended he see  a certain cardiologist in Guadalajara. After an EKG and other stress tests, cardiologist told him he was in danger and said he should have a Pacemaker implant immediately. Cardiologist had his own clinic in Guad. We believed him, trusted our GP's recommendation, and were too scared to take the time for a second opinion. We used GP's driver and returned the next day for the surgery and an overnight stay. A while later, my husband started again to have the flash blackouts and falls that he'd had before the surgery. Cardiologist said husband should get a walker. GP cheerfully came up with other reasons for the blackouts. One day my husband collapsed and was hospitalized while GP was away. When I called GP and asked him to contact my husband's doctor he said he'd do so right away. He never did. We never heard a word from him again.  We realized the hard way that  GP was and is a fraud and a quack, as others had learned in similar bad circumstances, I found out later. He continues to be a popular local doctor.  In this dire emergency when my husband collapsed, I contacted Dr. Hector Briseno, just a name I'd heard, of Quality Care Clinic. It was Dr Briseno and his team of specialists who save my husband's life.

I had faith in Dr. Rodriguez until the last session. Each time I went I had a new and different ailment. I got a second opinion and the new Doc said it was all nonsense.

Snark without purpose, Angus. Anyone can be suckered in by a doctor who comes across as delivering wisdom, even when it's pure b.s. Health issues are scary!

They seem to scare a small group of constant posters, forever being failed.

I haven't noticed that Angus. Rather I am appreciative those who are willing to share this sad information with us. It makes me more careful as I choose my medical help.  I've been in Ajijic 21 years when not up north and the only time I did not check was when I went to an eye Doc who did me harm. Nothing permanent, but I cancelled the next appointment after I was treated for something I learned I did not have and left a message with his secretary that I was cancelling his next appointment and that I was afraid to come back.

The Doc I wanted to see who has a great reputation was on maternity leave and rather than going to another recommended Doc, I went to one who had the best adv in the paper and phone book. Yep I was the fool. But never again.

Read the article written by Spencer McMullan on Cardiologist fraud, it might change your mind about "blaming the victims"

Your response is uncalled for.

Basically because this board has a very small contingent of regular posters, IMHO. This board has very little impact on life lakeside. Sure, rumours make the rounds, and the odd restaurant will suffer for a week from a bad review, but that's as far as it goes.
