I met a doctor couple and the man works on weekends at the new hospital in Jocptepec so if anyone has problems it may be best to go on the weekend as the guy speaks great English

There are two surgeons there, the younger one, Dr. Ivan lives in Ajijic and speaks perfect English. The older one speaks in Spanish, I believe his brother is/was the mayor of Jocotepec. They just perform day surgery procedures like gall bladder, cuts from falls, hernias, etc.

There is also a youngish Paramedic, who is often helping the doctors and nurses. He speaks pretty fair English.

I don't know this. You can't walk in asking for a specialist. Unless you are seen on an emergency basis -they make these decisions, up to and including sending you to Guadalajara. It starts with an appointment with the doctor assigned to you on your first visit, most likely in the Chapala Seguro Popular clinic. Dra Anna there speaks English. She will fill out a 9 page form which you then take to the Joco hospital and they then assign you a triage code, and then make arrangements for your care. It may be immediate, many days, or even weeks. Public hospitals love their paperwork. No matter where you end up, the Social Worker will tell you that you have to have someone stay with you. Many Mexican family members sleep on the floor, on a piece of cardboard - never seen that before! Just a heads up -more paperwork! You can't bring in pillows or mattresses - not sanitary.

I had hernia surgery there. You start at central de salud near the police station in Jocotepec or Chapala.  There you are sent to the hospital where you get an appointment to see a specialist. I had great treatment. I was charged extra for endoscopic and mesh. Never tried English because I don't need it. Also great follow up. I feel lucky to be so close to a great hospital.

If you have a cardio event, the Joco hospital will see you.  They have a toaster (defribillator) so they can zap you.

Quick exam and EKG, then you are punted to Guadalajara.  That is minimal care.

Obviously private healthcare is the best option, but everyone should have a plan in place for local emergency care so that you can buy some time.  Or buy a helicopter.
