I'd have to say that more than half of the Mexican population works in the underground economy because they have to, not necessarily by choice.

I'd have to say half the population hasn't the opportunity to work in the underground economy.

Like these folks:

According to the CDI, the states with the greatest percentage of indigenous population are: Yucatán, with 65.40%, Quintana Roo with 44.44% and Campeche with 44.54% of the population being indigenous, most of them Maya; Oaxaca with 65.73%of the population, the most numerous groups being the Mixtec and Zapotec peoples.

That is unless those boys who wash your windshield at stoplights are underground.  Or those Marias who sell peanuts and gum at the bus stop are underground.  They don't earn enough to even be part of Mexico's economy.  Drug dealers are underground.  You are underground, unless you have permission to repair computers and pay taxes on your earnings.

60% of Mexicans don't pay taxes.  Is that what you mean by, underground?  Since there are so many maybe they should be referred to as, upperground.

Mexico is awfully bureaucratic,  so is Spain, Italy, Russia, China, Cuba and on.  In some of those countries you have to wait 6 months to get a marriage licence.

IMO it comes down to religious beliefs as religion is normally the foundation of culture.    Protestants are Calvinistic,  or as I prefer, anal retentives (victims of severe toilet training).  They demand order and cleanliness.  Personally I'd rather wait in lines than live under the thumb of anal retentives.

Whenever we return to the USA, on foot, from Nogales, there is a special, always shorter line for ancianos approaching USA customs & immigration from the Mexican side.  We use it, and we are expected to use it.

modeeper left out that it would be considered very rude in Mexico to butt into the head of the line at any age, even 100. The truth is a person MUST ask everyone waiting if it is OK if they go ahead of them. The ones that say yes are the majority but some do say yes I do mind. He sometimes relies on short comments to convey things that when leaving out one of the most important aspects makes it look brazen when it is not. He is correct that it is very common in Mexico especially a 2 or more  hour wait to see a DR. that is a specialist or get tests done at an ISSSTE,  IMSS or Seguro Popular hospital or one of their Specialists Clinic.

I once had a bank manager see me at the back of their line and escorted me to the next available window. He asked nobody nothing.

He´s the bank manager not you. If you took it upon yourself to go to the next available window without asking everyone ahead of you their permission to do so  as modeeper stated is done here in Mexico that is rude even if you are very old looking [with a cane or not].

Why must everything be mentioned?  Yes, of course, logically, if you are in a facility that caters to a lot of old and/or sick people use your sense.  In that case use Alan's advice .. go to everyone in the line and ask, on a one to ten scale how sick are you, or how much pain are you in, or what's your DOA projection?  Then say, I'm a 10 or I have this sneaking suspicion I'ma gona kick tomorrow.  I was talking about the other 99% of Mexico's services, like the DMV, Telmex, Lottery window, CFE, ABC, DEF, and of course, the GHI.

Of course most Mexican´s don´t care about your so called superior socioeconomic status as you might think they do.

How do you know that?  If that perceived status raises an emotion in them then yes, they care.  Whether or not they respect it and defer to you is another matter.  If they don't especially care for the Gringoids it won't matter nohow.  Jealousy plays into it as well.   So does the fact they may have a bunch of relatives living NOB, especially sons and daughters who use Western Union a lot.

Pick a sample of 1000 folks worldwide and ask them if they were to migrate what would be their country of choice?  I doubt Mexico would be mentioned.  They know that.

Most of the people I meet can't wait to ask me, WTF are you doing here?  I tell them I came to live in Mexico cause I enjoy taking snapshots of the cathedrals and tianguis, attending birthday parties where kids get bashed in the face with a broom handle at the piñata. Or to watch the ritual of the face in the cake routine.  If you tell them you came for the food they'll understand.

What they don't want to hear is that you came here to retire cause it's cheap.  That's an automatic dis.  A person who worked in one of the World's richest nations for 50 years, who had all the opportunities they've never had, has to live out his life here on the cheap ... like me.

Here we go again...the same $%&/()s pontificating on their delusional sense of expertise on Mexican culture that has no bearing on the OP's question. Why don't you take your self indulgent comments elsewhere if you have nothing sensible to add to the topic posted? Believe me, most people here are tired of your nonsensical blabbing. Good-by.

If I take 547 and divide it by 118 I get 4.6.

If I take 502/189 I get 2.6.  Get my drift?  So you need a different angle, cowboy.

I'm trying to explain why older folks don't have to queue.  The OP's question was simple and has been answered.  I provided a service, you provided a personal attack.

Couldn't agree more, it's too bad there's no way to avoid having to even SEE the ignored"self indulgent comments" here! One or 2 posters seem to be able to hold all the rest of us at ransom.
