I've searched for a past email giving directions once you get to Petetan but can't find it and how long to get there from Walmart.

Can anyone supply that?  And will lots of pelicans still be there the week of Feb 18th?

Just one road in and out. Look for the road sign on the highway after you enter Michoacan and the peninsula that is Petatan can be seen jutting into the lake. Only one circular road in Petatan. Stay to the right and look for women cleaning fish under covered sheds on the left. That's it! Pelicans begin to leave in March and are pretty much gone by the end of the month.

From Walmart, you are driving west towards Jocotepec then continuing on around the lake.  Just one road.  You`re going 100 kilometers from San Antonio, a 2 hour drive.  I would suggest going online to get a map of Lake Chapala to see where you`re going. The boundary between Jalisco and Michoacan Al Berca mentioned is  10 kilometers past the city limits of Tizapan.

When is the best time of the year to view them?

November through the beginning of March are the times that have the largest number of Pelicans in Lake Chapala. They begin to arrive in larger numbers during October and begin to leave in larger numbers after the first part of March. Best time of day can be from 3:00 to 5:00 which is usually the time the locals decide to wheelbarrow the fish heads, etc. to the shore of the lake and dump them in. It is a photographer's dream when that happens. There are literally thousands of Pelicans at Petatan. Nothing at all like the scattered few in a couple of other lake spots.

Took us two hours with traffic three years ago

when you see the pelicans flying over lake chapala you know they arrived

best time probably Nov  15 to March 15

if you hire a boat locally you can see them off chapala.  about 200 of the hang at la floresta yacht club

East near st Nicolas there is about 300 that hang out there all year long
