Tooth implant recommendation

A friend of mine who lives in Houston Texas wants to get a tooth implant.  His dentist there has quoted an implant for $2,000. Is there any place down here that he can get a better deal?

Thanks for any information.

Yes I have had good luck with  Dr. Haro, others have had good luck with several other Dentists as well. Perhaps you should phone those Dental offices we recommend, and ask what the normal charge would be for a dental implant. You will find the prices lakeside to be much less than what is charged up north.

But just like up North, there are excellent dentists and others that I, and or we would not recommend.

I would also recommend Dr. Haro. There are more than a few variables that have to be considered when pricing and that makes it difficult to come up with a set price. Is a bone graft needed... is the original tooth still there and does it have to be removed or is it a healed space where a tooth used to be... and there is a waiting period after the implant has been done before the FINAL tooth cap can be placed (4 to 6 months). There will be a temporary cap in place before then.

Now, you've added two round trips and accommodation to the cost. Is it worth it for just one implant? You decide.

Do you have contact information for Dr. Haro?

Thanks

Pay SPECIAL attention to what Ferret has posted! There are MANY potential steps to an implant and ‘one size’ does not fit all.... and I don’t mean the physical size of the implant!  So one must know what the $2,000 in Houston covers and compare that to similar costs here.

Also be aware that most dentists here do NOT do the actual implant work themselves... they have specialists come down from Guadalajara. Dra. Candy ‘may’ be an exception to this but Dr. Haro ‘himself’ (nor Dr. Barragan) does not do the implant so his ‘skills’ and ‘years of practice’ are not really germane to the discussion.  NONE of this is intended to suggest that having implants lakeside is not a good idea but rather just as information that an educated dental patient might/should like to know.

Dr. Candy is sponsored every year for continuing training in dental implants in Europe.  Last year she went to Italy.  She has a model she can show you the steps for implants and yes, there are several and it takes some time.  If a dentist agrees to do an implant without a tomography, run.

Tomography will show if you have enough bone structure to support implants.

And this is especially true of upper molar implants.... there is not as much bone structure there anyway and the sinus cavity is just above. The last thing wants to have is an implant penetrating into the sinus cavity!

Exactly and tomography was done. But, one Dentist said I needed a bone graft and I balked. Went to Dr. Haro and he said I didn't need one. My bones are so hard that the specialist who came in from Guadalajara to do the actual implants had to practically kneel on my chest to drill. He wasn't a small guy either so I'm wondering if Dra. Candy actually does her own drilling? I do know that she is well versed in the latest techniques on implants.

Dra Candy is currently doing 2 implants for me (2 lower left maulers which were cracked by a dentist up north when performing a root canal). The first anchor was set about a month ago and is successful. The second anchor is scheduled to be set early February.

The cost I paid is 15,000.00 MXP per implant (tooth and anchor). A 3 dimensional Xray is required in order to determine the location/depth of the main nerve. From memory it cost 1,500.00 MXP and is done in Guadalajara. Then there are the medications which run around 2,500.00 MXP. All in all the first implant is costing around 20,000.00 MXP.

I did not feel a thing when the first anchor was set and trust me a hate going to the dentist. The procedure lasted about 45 minutes.

Whish she had been my dentist since day one.

Someone in Houston can easily drive to the US side of Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, park and walk across. The tourist-oriented town is reported to have more dentists than dogs. Their prices are lower than here.

Agree with Angus. NP is a super easy town to find a good dentist or doctor, they pride themselves on catering to tourists and Winter Texans as well as residents of the RGV. Good restaurants, generic drugs, booze etc. and a short drive from South Padre Island (best beaches in Texas, IMHO). Most vendors over there post prices in USD and when I  paid in pesos they asked if I didn't have dollars (I didn't). I got a great buy on an antibiotic but when returning to the US, Customs wanted to confiscate it. Said that people mailing anthrax use it to build up immunity before working with the anthrax, and it's no longer allowed to be imported. Gave it back to me when I showed my Mexican residency and told him I was just visiting the grandkids in Houston and needed it for a bladder infection. If I remember, about 4 blocks in any direction is as far as you need to walk and no cobblestones. As we were leaving a restaurant after lunch we were given a chit good for a teeth cleaning at a dentist right across the hall! Super salespeople and super nice, no beach vendor pressure that I remember.

Research "immediate implant". Broken tooth out and this implant in within an hour. One followup visit required. My husband is having an implant tomorrow. You want a dentist knowledgeable in the immediate implant process. And you should be placed on antibiotics about 2 days before the implant. Total cost with an excellent MX dentist who has 2 years additional training in the US specializing in implants is 30,000 p.

My husband's implant was less than 25 minutes. Freezing, remove broken tooth, drill in the existing bone cavity from where tooth was removed, install implant and temporary crown in a few days so no initial loading. In a very few weeks install final crown. There are no stitches and no pain other than the needle to freeze. This is totally unlike the procedure others are describing above.

I had 2 implants using same method 3 years ago and totally satisfied. Our dentist is MX trained but also trained at an American university for implants. He is the best dentist we have ever experienced and never a complaint from the many clients who have Dr Garcia as his dentist.

  • 1 year later...

LOL. I highly doubt that Dr. Haro himself is doing the implants... but the implants have always been done in his office and he brings in a specialist from Guadalajara to do them. Somehow, I think something either got lost in translation or has been assumed.
