Latest on driving pets into Mexico?

Have my Temp visa in hand and will be driving SOB shortly.  Would like clarfiication from those who have done so in the past 3-6 months.

My Guia Paisano notes that I must have paperwork showing rabies and deworming up to date (already done).

However, it also says I need a veterinarian's letter stating that my pets/cats are clinically sane to travel.  In addition, I am told no bedding or toys can be provided.

It was my understanding the last 2 ^ requirements were for air travel, and for those animals traveling via auto the requirements are not as stringent.

Anyone can share on this?

The Giua Paisano was given to me by the Mexican Consulate after my visa was affixed to my passport.

Here are just a few of the links that discuss the requirements for driving a pet dog or cat into Mexico:

And this is just one quote which describes the process of bringing a pet across the border via car:

  • "Either APHIS Form 7001 (pdf) Vet Health Certificate OR a certificate of good health issued by a veterinarian and printed on letterhead (handwritten documents are not accepted) in English and Spanish with the vet's professional license number or a photocopy of the license, and the vet's signature. Take the original and a simple copy.
  • Proof of rabies vaccine administered at least 15 days before the pet's arrival in Mexico. The vaccination certificate should state when the vaccine was administered and how long it is valid, as well as the product name and lot number.

When you arrive in Mexico with your pet, SAGARPA-SENASICA (Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food) personnel will conduct a brief physical inspection and verify that your pet is in compliance with the above requirements."

Just because an official provides you with paperwork does not mean it is necessary or applicable to you. However, I agree with Ferret. Have all the paperwork you might possibly be asked for. Chances are that if driving across you will not be asked for it. However, they CAN ask for it and the possible delay and hassle is not worth it. I have never heard of an inspection of dogs or cats being driven across the border. That is applicable to airport arrivals. Best of luck and welcome.

I would follow the rules. We did. I believe in Murphy's Law 'cuz, sure enough, if you don't have the correct paperwork, they will ask for it and your entry will be delayed.

Of course you would!  I guess my toilet training was a bit different.  I have crossed maybe 20 times in the past 35 years.  My dog has been my dog for about 12 years.  Where I go he goes.  The border guards at Otay (THE best crossing) practically know him by name.  Papers to cross into Mexico?  That's funny!!!!
