Do I need car title to cross border into Mexico at Nogales?

We're crossing the border from Nogales AZ to Nogales MX this coming Sunday morning.  We have our car registration with us, but not our title. We're getting wildly different answers: some say registration is all you need at the border crossing; others say, No, you have to have the title to the car.  Others say Don't have the car title original with you, because if a border guard takes it from you, it's proof of ownership and anyone possessing it becomes the owner of the car.  Help!  We'd like to know from people who've done this crossing -- do we need the title, or not?

1. "In the case of foreigners with a visitor’s permit [FMM tourist card], temporary resident and student temporary resident may temporarily import a single vehicle, having to present for such permit their valid passport or passport card and the official document issued by the immigration authority.
2. The interested party must show proof of ownership or possession of the vehicle intended to be temporarily imported, presenting for such effect any of the following original documents with a non-certified copy:
3. Title of ownership or valid registration of plates with evidence of them as owners of the vehicle, issued by the competent authority of the foreign country.
4. Leasing agreement on behalf of the importer, with a letter of the leasing company authorizing the temporary importation of the vehicle.
5. Credit agreement on behalf of the importer.
6. Document with evidence of the working relationship of the importer and the document showing proof that the company owns the vehicle.

 

State under oath to tell the truth that they commit to return the vehicle concerned within the authorized term and no longer perform acts or omissions that constitute offenses or crimes due to the improper use or destination of the vehicle."

The HUGE issue is that while you can technically get a TIP with the vehicle registration, without the title your car will sit in impound if towed due to improper parking or accident. ”

The bottom line is ... It is much better to have the title.. With registration you may get the TIP and you may not.. All depends on the agent.  With the title you know you won't have any issues..

I crossed at Nogales in July of this year and was required to have both the title and registration for my car.

Another example of the inconsistency when crossing the border..  It's  better to have all your i's dotted and your t's crossed when your at the border...
