Terry Esquivel
Reaching out to find out if any of you have ever had a home wired for internet connectivity in Ajijic and/or Chapala? Can you tell me how long it generally takes for the service provider (Telmex?) to come out and do the work? Is it weeks? months? Thanks in advance for your input! AngusMactavish
You mean wired to the house, not to each room, I guess. If the place has had previous telephone service, my experience is less than a week.
Al Berca
No wiring. Just a modem given to you when you apply for Internet. 48 hours or less and should be working assuming you already have a landline phone in use. If you don't already have an active phone line, the wait could be much longer.

Thanks for your input @Al Berca.

TelsZ4
I think your getting confused between "Phone Line" and "phone Number" I have a phone line/wiring in my place but I can't get a phone number or Internet service because Telmex tells me there no phone numbers or Internet connections available in Ajijic. I am on a waiting list, the wait time depends on how many subscribers give up their phone/internet service.

I was unaware of this issue of "no phone numbers or Internet connections available in Ajijic". May I ask how long you have been waiting, and how long you expect to be waiting? TelsZ4
I have been on the waiting list for 2 weeks now. Telmex told me they don't know how long it will take. Someone has to give up their phone number for someone else to get it.. The tenant that moved from my place took the phone number and Internet service to her new place... If you are in a real hurry for service you could try and buy a number from someone.. People do sell their phone numbers..
Yo1
It could be months, as some friends of mine experienced.
Terry Esquivel
Thanks for everyone's responses. Is there another service provider who can provide internet connectivity?
AngusMactavish
Yes, Telecable, the cable people.
RickS
... and of course one of the Cellular companies.... TelCel or AT&T. But if you use a lot of data, that option will be expensive.

I use Telmex and do not watch cable TV, so I have no experience (thankfully) with Telecable. I hear their speed is greater than Telmex in some areas, when it works. Some have both when they just have to have internet.

TelsZ4
I got Telecable hooked up 2 weeks ago. Could only get 5meg. It was hooked up in 2 business days. 100 peso installation fee and 200 peso per month. So far it has worked well a consistent 5 meg.
Terry Esquivel
@TelsZ4 Thanks for the update. Can you tell me whether Telecable has its own wiring or does it rely on the Telmex wiring? Thanks!
RVGRINGO
Telmex is by wires. Telecable is by cable.
Terry Esquivel
@RVGRINGO Thank you - based on the comments here it sounds like Telecable does not have the service limitations I hear Telmex does, at least at the present time. Appreciate your response!
RVGRINGO
Generally, Telecable has had faster internet service, but more frequent outages. Of course, you can bundle a TV package too. Lately, according to postings here and elsewhere, Telmex DSL seems to have been over-sold and overwhelmed. Phone service is good though & includes free calling to the US & Canada.
