If you have had a colonoscopy in the last year will you please answer these three questions.

Who was your gastroenterologist?

Where was the colonoscopy performed?

What was the approximate total cost of this procedure?

No additional information needed.

Thank you.

"I recommend Dr Martin Garcia, he is GI surgeon and the chief of surgeons in several Hospitals, the one I recommend for this is Hospital Ángel Leaño is the only one that does not have super bugs in Gdl."   This is from my personal physician.  The charge for the colonoscopy was 6500 pesos two weeks ago.

Super bugs??  As in germs???  Is he saying that all the other hospitals except Angel Leaño have super germs but somehow this one doesn't?

Thank you Georgia, Yo1 and Bontepar for answering exactly what I asked without trying to hijack or side track my thread. Very much appreciated. Hope I can get a couple more answers like the three of yours that respond to the topic instead of trying to change the topic.

I had one on June 17th.

The GI doc was Dr. Paulo Santana Arias from Guadalajara. He is a referral from my local internist Dr. Gerardo Leon.

The procedure was at the Ajijic Hospital

The base cost was 5800 pesos. Polyp studies 500 pesos/ea. I had two.

There were no problems or complications.

I read that most hospitals have superbugs/ MRSA ... if this hospital is an exception.. It would be interesting to know why or how come.

They take extraordinary steps in cleanliness from their floors to their instruments.  And all staff are trained and cooperate with the standards (very important).  Because of the rare possibility of a problem requiring blood products, I had the procedure in a hospital with a blood bank.  I have a rare blood type.

Had one done at a crappy small hospital in downtown Guadalajara, $10,000 pesos or so BUT it also included an endoscopy as I have had stomach bugs so they checked me from both ends.  Received photos and DVD of procedure.

The night before you'll sing to yourself the song Rocket Man from Elton John.

I had one done two weeks ago at Maskaras clinic and was charged 16,800 pesos. A doctor from Guadalajara did it. I was number 6 in line that I don't know the length of. If I had to do it again I would go to Guadalajara, I didn't like the way I was treated or the price I was charged. The anesthesiologist was on the point of being rude and the doctor didn't want to see me before the procedure to answer questions. Live and learn,

It's a rarity but your bowel could get pierced and you develop peritonitis which can lead to death. If someone says they can do you here in a clinic, run the other way and do not look back. This procedure requires a full service hospital in case of emergency.

Correct.

And, a colonoscopy does not necessarily show anything at all that is important. After six of them, my hubby finally had a cat scan. It was only the cat scan that showed the tumour growing in the WALL of the intestine right at the junction of the small and large intestine. IF you are having a problem and your colonoscopy is negative PLEASE consider having a cat scan done. It is far less invasive and shows a LOT more.

The colonoscopy is done as a first line diagnosis tool because polyps are not only visualized, they can be removed to prevent them from becoming cancerous.

I think, perhaps, you entirely missed the point of my post. There never were any polyps visualized nor any removed on any of his colonoscopies. Yet he died of stage four colon cancer.

Perhaps, instead of having all those useless barbaric colonoscopies, if he had had the cat scan done sooner he might still be here. Is that any clearer?

My point is that one should have a colonoscopy first for screening because many need those polyps removed. Your calling that barbaric is hysterical.

It is merely the latest [ahem!] preventative fad like the useless preventative use of Lipitor and the over use of catheter angiograms where ever old people congregate as an excellent target market.

Well, I guess we'll see who gets hysterical when you smugly sit and say "all is well because I had those polyps removed and, therefore, I'm safe from cancer".

One test for all cancer, ya that's it.

You should know.  You lived with this situation.  Others may be under-informed and think they know more than the medical professionals who recommend a cat scan.  The trouble with web board information like this is that I doubt anyone posting is a specialist in that field of medicine.
