mudgirl
Most washing machines have a small, fine filter screen which sits just inside the water inlet valves where you would screw the hoses on. This will prevent any crud from entering your machine. If you find water is entering the machine slowly, this screen is plugged up. I pull mine out and clean it (I only have cold water hooked up, so only need to do one) about once a month.
ComputerGuy
I had a plumber install an outboard filter for my washing machine, after suffering through the plugged screen (in Riberas, where the water is full of sand). It's inline with the cold water (I don't use the hot), and is the same size filter used for water-filtration systems. It is secured to the wall just above the washing machine. Didn't cost very much, the filter only needs cleaning every few months, and the water --which used to trickle in-- pours in like it should.
